Hi all,

I recently phoned my doctors surgery to ask about how long term prescriptions work and during the course of the conversation the receptionist informed me that if I'm out of the UK for longer than 3 months I will be taken off their records and will have to re-register on my return.

However, I will still be registered at an address in the UK and will continue to pay tax whilst working in Saudi. I've lived abroad for longer than 3 months before as a student and have spent 4 months backpacking, for neither of these times did I have to be taken off their records.

Anyone got any advice on what to do/push with my surgery? I've read a lot of differing things on here and other sites on the net, so I'm hoping someone who's been in a similar situation can give me some advice!

Thanks!

If you ARE paying taxes and keeping your residence then you need to supply proof of that. Best to investigate where you register and what the rules and regulations are. The person you spoke to may not necessarily be in the know

here is what someone said on another site... u will loose ur right for free NHS treatment if r away for 180 days

You have to notify the Inland Revenue and the NHS.
If you move to another EU country, once you are out of the UK for 183 days (not consectutive) you are classed as a resident of the country you have moved to. You are then liable to pay tax in your new country. Once you have been in your new country for 183 days you should make your own medical arrangements. You will not be entitled to use the NHS (except for emergency treatment) in the UK, even though you have paid your taxes there.
As for your UK bank. You can still have a bank account in the UK if you have an address there. If you were to move abroad then any interest you got from your bank you would claim back with an R85 form, but then you should pay tax in your new country.
One thing to remember, you will still be a British citizen and your domicile will be the UK.

Do not tell them you are working away. Prescriptions can be filled in KSA. What are you doing for health cover in KSA ?

Thanks for the help.

The problem I have is that I've recently started taking long term medication and I had to discuss my plans with my consultant to ensure I got all the necessary checks, tests and treatments done before I leave.

So my consultant knows I will be moving abroad and will hopefully issue me with a 6 month prescription. I will know this for sure next week. If not then I have the option of someone collecting the prescription on my behalf and posting the tablets to me!

So based on what you've all said I think I'm best just changing my address back to my parents (which all other bills and statements will be sent anyway, so I don't have to worry about closing my bank account.)

Seems a bit unfair that you're not entitled to NHS treatment after only 183 days if you're still paying all your taxes!!

@Scot47 - I know I have medical insurance as part of my employment package. Will I be able to just transfer a prescription over, or will I have to have tests done in KSA??

Anyway, thanks for help!

In theory you need a prescriprion in KSA but 99 percent of drugs are supplied without one. Just go to any Pharmacy. There SARE restrictions on certain psychotropic and psychoactive drugs. Some are not available in KSA.
