To answer your question, you need your original degree and any certificates to be apostilled if you want a work permit.

Are you sure about this? I'm pretty sure the whole apostille thing only applies to Hauge countries which include Korea and Japan but not Vietnam. In the U.S. documents get either apostilled or authenticated through your state's Secretary of State. On my state's SoS website, it specifies that documents should only get apostilled if they're being used for Hauge countries (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostille_Convention ).

I'm coming to Vietnam in February, and will only be home for two months beforehand. I'm debating whether or not to get my documents notarized and authenticated in the States to avoid the hassle of doing it in Vietnam. If I do, would I still need to go to the U.S. consulate in HCMC anyway? Thanks!

All I know is that when I needed to get a new work permit about 10 months ago, I had to have them first authenticated through my state's Department of State, then I had to get them notarized at the Embassy in HCMC.

My school specifically asked me to do both of these, and they then took both the documents, and I received my Work Permit and Temporary Resident's Card about a month later.

I've never had to do the work myself. It could be that the school just wanted all the bases covered, just in case. But they seemed to know what they were doing.
