|
|
Hi all,
I'm from Ireland and I have been looking for work in the Jieyang area of Guangdong. Several schools have told me that they cannot provide me with a Z-visa because Ireland is not recognised as a native English-speaking country. Obviously, I am stupefied by such a response.
Have any other Irish people experienced this problem elsewhere in the Guangdong region or outside?
I am only looking to work in this area as my fiancee has moved there. Can anybody advise me what I should do now to find a job? I was thinking of contacting my embassy but I don't now how far that will get me; whether I am just being naive....
Thanks all for any advice |

http://jobs.classifieds1000.com/China/Teaching_Jobs/Guangdong_REQUIRE_ESL_teacher
"Requirements:
Native English teachers are from USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand. Female, age between 25-40 years old."
http://www.jobchina.net/index.php?post_id=116048
"Requirements:
- Teaching experience
- Degree in any field
- British, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, South African, South American, European or Russian Passport holders"
What's more important is that there is contact information so you can get more offers. I got the 2 offers above with a 10 second search for "guangdong irish teacher". |

I'm Irish, and have heard nothing about this. Sounds like some sort of stupid cock up. Don't be surprised at the levels of ignorance of their own laws by those looking to hire FTs. |

My guess is that the group of schools in that area have mistakenly left out Irish from their list of teachers to hire, and that it's not a government directive. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. This appears to be the case as I have received plenty of offers for jobs in other regions except Jieyang. The problem is that I need a job in this area as my fiancee is moving there
Goddamn rotten luck! |

As distasteful as it might sound, you could just say you're British. Very few Chinese recognise the republic as being different from being British. It'll get you the jobs, and by the actual visa processing stage, it won't matter that you're Irish since it'll be processed by the real system. Not silly FAOs. |

Why would it be distasteful to say you are British seeing as you are spreading British colonial washback all over the far east with the teaching of the oppressors language? You should be proper Gaels and teach your own language - see how far you get.
Oliver Cromwell would be proud of all those Irish EFL teachers plying their trade. |
