I`ve just arrived in Shiga and will be living here teaching English. I have a feeling I will get bored quickly and am interested in bartending ina bar or club, maybe in Kyoto?? I was a bartender back home, but one problem...... I do not speak any Japanese. I have heard from some people that this doesn`t mattter, that there are many foreigner`s bars that have gaijins like me working.

Do you think this is possible??? Would the pay be worth it?? I know that nobody tips here so I wonder how the hourly pasy would be, I would assume it would be uncer the table??

THANKS

You dont say what visa you are on but if its an instructors visa you can not do anything other than teach English on that visa.

Spouse visa will give you some openings

there are three 'foreign' bars in Kyoto I know of, pig and Whistle, Hill of tara and Taghs in Shijo . All have a large foreign and japanese clientele so you would need to know some basic Japanese (including reading the menu, and how to count change etc, take orders etc) You would need the proper work visa, probably.

Pay is about 800-1000 yen an hour but the live music nights are pretty good.

I will have a working visa by mid July.
As for the pay, 1000 Y/hour sounds really bad for Japan. Is this what I should expect at most locations???

If its any consolation, working at NOVA for a 40 hour work week @250,000 yen a month works out to 1,500 an hour for a full time teacher.

What do you expect for pouring drinks in a bar? Handling out flyers and students working at McDonalds in japan, or doing a part time job is 700-800 yen an hour.

The service industry in Japan does not pay like it does back in NA. I remember bartending in the early 90's when I was in university and making about $35/hr Cdn including tips. There is little or no tipping here.
