Wall Street Indonesia (WSI) was advertising for staff in Bandung last month. It appears they are going to open a branch in Paris Von Java Mall (the most upscale mall in the city). This will provide a welcome new option for teachers with Degrees in English, Linguistics and TEFL (the magic requirements needed to meet the DIKNAS requirements).
Until now your options have been limited to EF (who do pay a bit more in Bandung- up to Rp 9.000.000) or TBI. EF Bandung may be a decent option for people wanting to avoid EF Swara- they certainly don't attract the kinds of negative reviews which have dogged EF Swara.
In contrast, TBI Jalan Riau should be avoided at all costs. All expat teachers left in 2012 after even those without KITASes were forced to work in government schools by the school manager (a crony of the man behind the illegal VKU teachers scam). This was an outrageous request as they were exposing expats to the risk of deportation. Furthermore, this manager was so incompetent that some teachers were paid 7 weeks late at one point.
The school manager personally told me he does not have a degree in any subject and the teachers I spoke with described him as both incompetent and insensitive. He seemed to have no empathy about forcing teachers without the right visa to walk right into a government school! This could easily have resulted in deportation and was widely resented by every expat in the school. This manager was removed for 8 months from April 2012 after a blog exposed what he was doing, but after the last Director was removed in December 2012, he returned. This is seen as proof that the same old corrupt clique are still firmly in control of TBI. One illegal scam after the other has been their style since 2011. |
