Imagine a climate controlled city that is the perfect temperature all year round. One for bachelor men, and one for families (tinted of course). These cities would have affordable housing for all inhabitants augmented by Saudi oil profits. Outside these cities there would be weather control technology that would slowly convert or terraform the harsh environment into a more livable and agriculturally sustainable one.

Once the land is greener and producing food and sustaining itself in its own bio-system with regular rainfalls, then the movement of the dome population can slowly migrate back out into the former desert that they came from.

I may be posting in the wrong forum but the jobs for EFL teachers would be much more enjoyable and bearable then. Sometimes it's the searing heat of the desert that gets expats weary and frustrated. I don't mind waiting outside a store for prayer to finish in reasonable weather, but 45 degree heat is just too frustrating when you misjudge prayer calls.

I never got the being locked out of establishments in the sweltering heat in the first place when the whole idea is the prohibition of exchange of monies during prayer times, which I can dig. That's why cash registers come equipped with locks and mutawa come equipped with eyes.

The whole purpose of being locked out in the elements is to be obnoxious...which, ironically, also seems to be the whole idea of being Saudi Arabia in the first place.

I suggest a dome being placed over the entire country. It seems that THAT would solve a whole HOST of problems that they have.

Now that holy grail is a step closer after scientists employed by the ruler of Abu Dhabi claim to have generated a series of downpours.

Fifty rainstorms were created last year in the state's eastern Al Ain region using technology designed to control the weather.

Wow... and why haven't they done that in Saudi yet?

I like that idea. Perhaps if the 'royal' family had not helped themselves to the several hundreds of billions of dollars that they have stolen over the decades, it could have been done by now and we would be in the migrating out phase now.

Dear Grendal,

Another King already tried that; it didn't work out all that well:

Personally I think the planners smoke too much hash... how would they afford such a system once the oil starts running out... which isn't as far away as most people think.

Too many billions have been squandered and continue to be squandered to do anything practical.

As to the claim of 50 rainstorms created in Al Ain... this was in 2011 and oddly doesn't appear to have ever been covered by any legitimate news or science site that I can find on google. (daily mail? had an article and said that it was basically pulling whatever water was in the air...) Interesting, but not sure of its sustainability.

I wonder if any Al-Ain teachers noticed it. No one I know there mentioned it.

Come on! If they can cut the moon in half then stick it back together again, surely putting a dome over the place and controlling the weather is as easy as driving a car or getting out of bed in the morning ... oh, hang on ...

Catch-22 might also help one to anticipate the "logic" of the Kingdom. Very Happy

You should have told her that the OUTSIDE air IS conditioned.

It's conditioned to make us SUFFER!
