EDEX put teachers in apartment hotels and tried to put them in similar ones in the middle of nowhere or near the motorways, which if the teachers chose to, they had to cross the major road to get to the supermarket. Because of this EDEX provided a weekly shopping trip bus.

Don't forget the teacher who worked for them in Najran (2011) and got killed crossing the motorway in front of the hotel accommodation. Edex isn't a pretty company.

Grendal's comments are spot-on. I think the longer some of us are in KSA (I've been here almost five years), the more cynical we become. I'm not referring to anyone here on this post, but I think we all could be more open-minded and positive. I really do feel that if you are the kind of person that tries to make the best of your experience and sees the glass as "half-full", then you should do fine. I wouldn't work for EdEx - too many bad things have been posted about them in the past, but I would if it was the only hope to get a teaching job (gee, am I being cynical Shocked ).

I knew the gentleman concerned and in all fairness, his death had nothing to do with edex. However, the resulting fracas post-death showed EdEx in a very bad light.

RIP R.S.

Not only EdEx, it's happened other times with other companies as well.

Open-minded and Positive that is what is missing sometimes on this site. I sometimes wonder if the post about Edex is really about just one person - and therefore not relevant to the question. I suspect there are quite a few genuine people working at Edex who are doing there best and I know there are some very good, well educated teachers who work for Edex because it is their choice and not because they have no choice. So come on people - think about these new teachers who have signed contracts and are going to SA for the first time - give them some Open-minded and Positive advice as well as pointing out the pitfalls of working for Contractors (any) because basically there is not much to pick between the lot of them

Not it isn't my friend!

People will work in any conditions in every industry for this thing called 'money'. ESL is not an elitist field- it's a job, like any other, so people put up with negative things and that's one of them.

Please read my up to date comment regarding this.

In all fairness, I lived in the same hotel the year before. Two teachers had their rooms broken into that year. Both times, the teacher was in the room and chased the intruder away. Once, it was a hotel employee, the other time it was a driver following the teacher to his room. Neither incident happened for the purpose of theft.

And yes, I was there the day after the accident. Edex was doing nothing for the first couple days at least.

The gender referred to in this statement is not surprising. Only one thing I want to clear up. Is it a typo?

No typo Very Happy Grendal: it's the correct gender specific possessive pronoun (is there such a thing as a 3rd person male determiner or just the pronoun?). In Arabic it would be a tougher gender suppletive genetive, but as you say the incident is not that unusual in Saudi.

The second incident would have used the gender neutral first person plural determiner: "Kendi" is the Turkish etymology of that possessive form. It all brings back a horrible memory. Don't want to go into it.

You were in Najran a couple of days after the death of R.S?

Send me a PM because you will know who I am.

You are one of the following: K.T, C.H, S.A, A.O, J.D, K.D, A.K, L.S, Buzz or Big fat AG - if you are none of those then you weren't there - or not in the aftermath of the death of R.S.

Oh dear!....

R. I. P and that should be the end of that saga!

It hasn't got any better with EDEX or ICEAT - still in the wilderness and taking the bus at the Godforsaken time of 6am onwards..... & crossing the highway to get to the supermarket.

What a load of rubbish!! And where does the money go which these companies are ripping off us!!! In their pockets!

I wanna go home..... Rolling Eyes
