Hello!
I am going to central Mexico to job hunt (Gulp) I'm looking for a great town that is livable. I lived in Leon before and found it to be TOO sprawled and with too much traffic. Morelia seems nice, safe and peaceful... I also like Guanajuato city. I enjoy running, mingling with the locals, and am not too into big American tourist destinations. I also like being able to take classes of some sort in Spanish. I enjoy cultural activities. SAn Miguel sounds ok, but I wonder how much Spanish I would use there with the ex pat scene.
Any other good places not to miss? Also, do you know any language schools that are reputable in central Mexico to drop my resume off to and visit? (I'm looking to teach anywhere from high school to adult age) just pm me if you do. I'm also not opposed to cities off the beaten track if they have an English school. In fact, I welcome suggestions.

In addition to Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Morelia, I also liked Queretaro a lot. I didn't know much about the city until I arrived there. It was prettier than I expected. I was there in '98. At that time, the travel books didn't say much about it. The architecture is especially interesting. The city even has an aqueduct, which if I remember right was built around 1700.
Taxco was also a very pretty town. Overly hilly in spots when walking on cobblestone streets after a rain. And none of the streets are closed to cars, as they are in Guanajuato. But it is an exceptionally beautiful town. The buildings are virtually all white stucco with red clay tile roofs. The main bascillica in the center of the city is one of the prettiest churches I saw anywhere in Mexico. The entire town sits on a series of steep hills, which give it an interesting terraced look.
Another nice central Mexico town is Patzcuaro. It is on the south shore of the lake with the same name. It is much smaller than the other towns we have mentioned and is very slow-paced. There may not be much to do right in the town. But it is quite pretty and has a significant indegenous influence. The sorrounding countryside is beautiful.

Patzcuaro is a nice place, but I don't think you would find much in the way of teaching work there. 40 minutes west is Uruapan which is a little bigger and does have a couple of schools that are pretty decent. PM me if you want some specific names etc.
Uruapan is not over-run with ex-pats but it does have some very popular tourist spots. It is more 'outdoorsy' than most cities I have been to in the region.
