I live in the tropics & suddenly came down with a fever. The hospital wanted me to check in, diarrhea 7/24, blood pressure way down, etc.
I had a contract for this year, so wrote the uni asap that I couldn't come and why. They were cool. The recruiter, though, started sending me increasingly hostile emails. The last one was particularly obscene, so bad I didn't want to forward it to the uni to complain about her.
But I'd like to tell you. Hope it's ok to do this on the board. If not, I assume they'll remove it.
Her name is Yee Boo and her email is <[email protected]>. She also uses gmail and hotmail. I Not such a great recruiter, either, but that's your business.
As soon as I could, I got the hospital bill & dr's certificate scanned, sent to the uni & even to the recruiter: would like to have my records ok. Still not in such great condition, so would appreciate being left in peace... |

The recruiter must be a newbie. Ones who have been in the business for awhile don't get riled up over that sort of thing. (Or at least they don't indicate extreme displeasure like this one).
There was a strong arm recruiter named Frank who, I heard, went ballistic often, but I don't think he's in business anymore. |

I feel for you bud.
This is my first time seeking a teaching position in China and what can I say but WOW, my eyes almost leaving their sockets.
Since May I have tried different application methods for positions, applying directly to the Universities and the job ads on this site and posting my resume. The majority of the responses are from recruiters who in many cases refuse to answer any pertinent questions you may have about the school such as the accommodations, contract terms etc and one particular case that spanned a month the person would not identify him/herself.
All this person wrote was a couple of sentences in bold "THIS GOOD SCHOOL, YOU ACCEPT OFFER?" with phony example contracts attached. Moreover, the person gave me 45 min warning that 2 schools would be interested in contacting me over Skype at 1 pm China time which in Canada is 1AM in the freakin morning when I was asleep and had to work the next day. Absolute zero consideration for the person at the other side of the planet. The person also never read me resume to appreciable extent.
This had been the most unprofessional lines of communication I have ever witnessed in the working world. I basically told them to shove it!
I feel bad for the people who get suckered by them and end up in sh1tholes for 1 year, if you leave they will say breach of contract and you end up as hostage till you pay the breach contract fee $XXXX.xx . |

Nobody's held hostage in a job. If you're unhappy you pack up and leave. And I've never heard of anyone having to pay the breach penalty, just as I've never heard of anyone ever claiming one from a school. |

A teacher I worked with wanted out of his contract...after more than a few years here he just lost it one day and wanted to pack up and go. School threatened him with the breach penalty. The guy went to every class on time and wrote on the board what the students were to do then just sat down with a book. Never said a single word to the students. The school quickly dropped all threats and sent him on his way. |

As an aside I've found that Chinese have very little appreciation of international times and distances.
In NZ which is 4 hours ahead of China (5 in summer) Chinese students complained that their homestay host families wouldn't let them take calls from their parents.
Hue and cry of course from the PC mob, until it came out that the parents were picking up the phone at 9pm China time to call junior, by which time it was 1am in NZ. |

The Chinese don't get out much, do they?
Many of my students could not get their heads wrapped around the concept of time zones. It might have something to do with never seeing the world as a sphere, just a two-dimensional representation of a collection of borders.
One can't fault them for it.

Just one - at least officially.
Urumqi in the far West maintains the same time as Beijing despite being 1500 miles away ie about twice the distance from New York to Chicago.
There also is no daylight saving (Summer) time either. It was tried a few years back but confused everyone so they abandoned it.
I'm not sure though if there are local conventions in Urumqi to offset the official Beijing standard.
The Time and Date site shows sunset in Urumqi at around 9pm which must be inconvenient. |

I have heard that both Xinjiang and Tibet use unofficial times. There are technically 5 time zones in China, they are just not official. Why you have 8 AM classes while it is dark outside in some places. |

I had a recruiter tell me "you are shit" and "go to hell" when I told her that I found a position with another recruiter. Her skype name was "septeacher" and her email is [email protected]
Her name is Caro. Avoid her if possible |
