|
|
I will be starting out teaching Freshman university students in China. I'm told there will be around 50 students in the classes. I have 15 years experience coming up with lesson plans teaching tennis, but obviously this is a whole new ball game.
I'm sure there are teachers with lesson plans, and actual lessons on youtube, but I can't really find anything good.
Can someone recommend any videos, or any other reference materials that might help me?
I figure that once I see how other people do it, and get some ideas, that I will be able to come up with my own lesson plans.
Thanks for any help. |

Good you finally realized this. Your frequent references to your experience teaching tennis never made sense to me because it's unrelated to TEFL. Anyway, I thought you'd planned to get CELTA/TEFL training before embarking on your teaching career. It definitely would be invaluable for this first teaching job. |

I'm going to do it for a year, and if it goes well, get the CELTA, and go from there. The Chinese Uni seems like the safest job in many respects. |

A decent book on TEFL might be sensible too. There are quite a few threads on this subject. |

Well, if you are determined to go into this with no training, I can at least offer you something. There's a free textbook available that is actually designed for teachers who have no language training. It's designed to be used with students who can read some English but don't speak much, which has been the case with Chinese students I've had in the U.S. so it may work for you.
I haven't been on here in a while. Are we allowed to post links? I don't remember.... PM me if you want it. |

When I said other resources, I meant books, dvd's anything. I know there are loads of books, I'm looking for a recommendation. |

I really must recommend basic teacher training - it's the bee's knees!
In the meantime, I think JenniferESL has a good channel to watch.
There are often Youtube videos of Chinese uni teachers without any training and it's more comic relief than anything else I wish I was jesting but I'm not. |

I'm a teacher trainer for teachers who have to teach English but have no training in language acquisition. My blog - I'll pm it to you- has a bunch of stuff and my book is free to download and aimed at Asia. |

I was gonna ask the same question too but I saw this thread. I don't have teacher training whatsoever so it's good to read comments from people who wanted to help. I'ma teach my friend who wants to take TOEFL test this year. lack of money on his part that's why he can't go to regular english classes to prepare. good thing such thread was created for someone like myself who's looking to get some info how to teach english without proper training |

Perhaps you should consider what the value is, if any, to you and your prospective students if you don't get 'proper' TEFL training.

I understand the feeling that trained teachers have about this. I work really hard at this, and I'd like people to take it seriously enough to work hard at it, too. But the fact is there are thousands, tens of thousands, of teachers in the developing world who are charged with teaching English without training. I'd rather it weren't the case, but it is, so I became a teacher trainer. My job is to develop materials and training for them, so, I'm happy to share.

Could someone with experience tell me how her lesson is?
I found it useful to see a teacher in action, especially since my classes will be very similar. I will have 50 freshmen in each class, with same desk layout, and even the same province(Henan).
Does anyone know of other videos like this? |
