Thanks for the recommendation for CIEE MotherF, although I think it's overpriced. I do want to get some teaching training but other boards and posters say first-timers won't be paid well in south america anyway and they don't require a TEFL or TESOL. |
While that may be true of first jobs, not having some sort of teacher training will keep you in that kind of job indefinitely in Latin America.
If you really want to try it out before you train, then you need to look for those intenational chain schools that require all their teachers to a couple of weeks of unpaid training in their "trademark" method before starting work.
There are quite a few of those in Asia, look in the sub-boards for current info as I haven't been there for 15 years.
In Mexico you could try Harmon Hall or Berlitz as both of those hire teachers with or without certificates then make them go through their training anyways and you have to teach according to their scripts. Not the most rewarding experience, but it's something.
I've always thought the cook-chef analogy was a great one for the TEFL world. We can't all be top chefs and I'm sure we all frequent the bottom rung places for a quick meal from time to time.
I'm in the process of working up a reality show concept where we'd all get a chance to go head to head with Jack Richards and Micheal McCarthy in planning a class with a mystery grammar point and lexical theme and be judged by a class of deserning English Language Learners. |

I'm wondering if reading a good TEFL book will help. As long as I have practice lessons and can do a demo, wouldn't I be fine?
I want to get the first year experience and if I want to make a career of it, then consider more expensive certifications.
nomad soul, I will look into volunteering in a classroom but I live in the boonies right now so I'm not certain they have those organizations within 2 hours of me. |
If you are serious about this, the price of a course is just the mature step to take. Since you have a business background AND you are interested in Latin America, I suggest ITTO in Guadalajara. I loved it and learned things I used for years. They also provide job placement and you may actually make your money back if you take a business/corporate job. That may be the only way to make much money there actually. If you are interested in Latin America, let me tell you from the other side of the planet, countries are not interchangeable. There is different and then there is different. It may be worth getting your first experience in a culture a bit easier to adjust to - Mexico or thereabouts. Good luck. |
