I received an offer from Saudi British Centre. The salary offered was 11,300 SAR; housing and transportation is provided, as well as health insurance and airfare.
I have a couple questions:
1. Does anyone have any information about the school or the recruiter Mr. Laham?
2. Is that a reasonable amount? This is my first time looking for teaching jobs overseas. My ESL teaching experience is 2 yrs in the Peace Corps where I created an ESL theatre program for high school students and currently teaching Adults English in the US in the evenings. I have 220 hrs TEFL certification and practiced law for years, so I have a J.D. My undergraduate degree is a BFA in theatre.
Thank you!!!!!!!! |

Did you do a search on this board? It comes up with 49 matches here. (use the blue button near the log in... use the option "search for all terms" and put the drop down on Saudi)
As to the salary... with your limited credentials and experience, I doubt that you would get a much higher offer. Since "theater" is not done in KSA, that experience and education will not be relevant.

Not quite true VS, although the performing arts have along way to go to reach mainstream society in KSA. There are some that do engage in theater arts. Case in point: PSU recently (last term) put on a major 3 hour play of Julius Caesar.

Since a huge percentage of the population considers even the idea of theater to be "haram," I would avoid it in Saudi. Way too easy for an expat to make a mis-step and end up out of a job.

Again, I am not opposed to what you are saying... as it is true that most of KSA society does not openly accept this form of entertainment. However...it really depends on who you work for and the type of play one puts on. There are aspiring Arab actors and theater that has not reached mainstream society yet...granted live theater is rare, but not totally unheard of...times are changing albeit slooooowly
Yes, a newbie westerner would be wise to suss it out first before breaking out in song and dance on a stage.

... at Saudi Business Center? Don't see them as an organization that would be trying to break boundaries.
