I've got a job set up in China, starting in Sept. It's only 6 months to start but I may want to renew. Because I really don't know what my plans are going to be, I don't want to buy a return ticket. I probably won't even be flying home from China. But I've heard mixed things about traveling on a one way ticket. Some say I might be refused at the airport. I'm only going to have a tourist visa when I fly there (they change it to a z visa once I arrive). Can anyone give me any advice on this? I'll be flying from Canada. |

I, and many others, have entered China easily on a one-way ticket and L visa.
Problems only seem to arise when some misinformed airline official insists that this can't be done, and makes you buy a return ticket. If you're departing from a major airport it shouldn't be a problem, but have an explanation ready, e.g, "I'm travelling on the Trans Siberian, and a friend has booked my ticket in Beijing". |

I have a letter of invitation from the school I'll be teaching at. Can I just show it to the customs people and get a working visa, or do I have to do something over here first? |

I just flew with a one-way ticket two weeks ago from L.A. to HK. I then took a train to Guangzhou. I had no trouble. Nobody ever mentioned or seemed to care if I had only a one-way ticket.
I recommend not worrying about it. |

LSP, yes, there's a lot you have to do!
First, get a medical form from your nearest PRC Consulate, or from their website [the link on this page doesn't work anymore], get your medical done, then apply for a Z visa with that and your letter of invitation. Your travel agent should help you if there is no consulate nearby. |

I just flew from San Francisco to Chengdu, via Korea on a tourist visa, no questions asked. |
