are you perhaps confused with the police registration form? that's the
paper ya gets from the local police with your current residence registered.
the 15 various psb registrations i have from three provinces do not have
expiry dates; some posters in other locations do have expiration dates on
theirs.

Yes, but I understand now. Thanks! So I guess that means I can move around all I want (not that I'd want to though), I just have to register my domicile with local police, dangerous man that I am. And that is NOT a residency permit.

But one could be excused thinking the RP renewal is not the visa renewal. After all, in all the countries I know you get a visa for a specific amount of time, which may be renewed, that precludes a permit to live in said country (it would defeat the purpose of a visa after all if you couldn't live there). But whatever- ming bai le.

how many years ya been in china, bro?

Ha ha. A year and a half. I haven't really had to consider this stuff before as my school has always taken care of it. And I don't like bureaucracy, passports, visas, or nation-states anyhow. For humans, the world is a bunch of glorified prison camps. But that's just how I see it.

It didn't take me long to know I hated chodofu! : D

Ah, I see. All this time I thought that that grey attachment to my passport was a visa renewal but now I see it's a Residency Permit. I also hold a Foreign Expert's book which has my local address in it. Since I have to go with my FAO every year to the police station to have it renewed, I assumed it was the residency permit. But I guess that's just registering where you live. So if you move you need to go to the local police station for registering? And it's the expiration date in my PR I need to worry about , not the Foreign Expert's book?

You need to worry about the expiration date on your RP and FEC. Each need to be renewed before they expire. The RP is issued by the PSB and the FEC uis issued by the FEB. I love acronyms. Foreign Expert Bureau.

At your local police station (not PSB) you will register your residence. This does not expire that I am aware of. You will however need to do this (technically) anywhere you stay even if for only one night. If you do not move or travel it's a complete non issue after you do it the first time.

Indeed. It's funny then that I just travelled a month around Yunnan, went through highway checkpoints where we were searched, but never registered with the police for each little hotel I stayed at nor knew that 'technically' I was supposed to. You never know when a technicality could land you in hot water here. Even so, on trips I think I'll take my chances. Actually, most hotels will give your document a through check and photocopy, but none have ever asked me about registering with the police.

But does the FEC expiration have anything to do with the PR expiration as far as the letter of release is concerned? I seem to recall that FEC expires before my PR.
