Hello,
I went through a recruiter to obtain a job at what appears to be a very reputable and well-connected boarding school. I sent all the info to them to process the visa and the like. On August 18th, I was told that they would apply for my expert card and then use that to get the visa. Whenever I ask how long this process is going to take, I never get a straight answer out of them. I was once told that Beijing has had some stuff go down recently so the process can take a long time.
What I want to know is:
How long should the process really take? At what point should I just throw in the towel and deal with the fact that something is irreparably wrong or that I got bamboozled?
And secondly, at what point should I begin freaking out that something is wrong? The Chinese are sort of difficult to deal with; I feel like a lot is lost in translation between cultures.
Thanks kindly, and I appreciate your responses since I'm sure this topic has been hashed out a million times already.
Cheers,
Amanda |

The school is represented by an agency. I'm not dealing with the school directly. Thought I should clarify. |

I'm going through something similar which I recently posted about. I was told that the Z visa takes up to 40 days to process. It's difficult for me to get updates as well, but my recruiter contacted me just last night (after I had sent him several emails) and said it's still in process. So my guess would be that you're ok

You aren't waiting for the Z visa. You're waiting for the letter of invitation that you will send to your local Chinese embassy in order to obtain the visa. I recommend that you visit the website of your local Chinese consulate to see other documents you will need to supply.
If your recruiter really said that he's processing your visa, run. Recruiters do not and cannot obtain a Z visa for you. |

Well, personally, and this is just a guess, I don't think you are getting bamboozled, I think you are getting sandbagged. By that I mean the recruiter does not want to lose the sale, so he has several candidates on the line at the same time and hopefully one of them will come through and get the job so he gets his commission.
To be honest, that can work both ways. I have had several recruiters/employers on the line as well, in the event that a position I wanted fell through.
At any rate, no point "freaking out" unless you have already bought a non-refundable air line ticket - there still seems to be a lot of jobs out there. |

I would opine that it is nothing personal. You, like many others, have been caught up in the July 1st - September 1st changes. Confusion has always been the modus operandi in China as I would assume you know, but it has gone to a new extreme with the changes.
Obviously the boarding school needs you, and the recruiter doesn't get paid unless he physically places you, so I think it is safe to deduce that it is caught up at the governmental end.
I would stay stick with it you want the job and can afford sitting around, but if they start making suggestions that will cost you money like going to Hong Kong etc, walk away. I use that only as an example as people have recently been getting turned down there, and you know as well as anyone that they won't reimburse you for not doing their homework properly.
All the best! |
