Hi Yaramaz
Interesting survey, if Istanbul is in the top twenty does it not follow that other Turkish cities would be in the top 100 or even 50 ? |

My rent for a room in a small 2 bedroom in Istanbul in what's considered an over-priced though not posh area: approx. $150/mo. My friend's rent for one room in a small-ish 3 bedroom in San Francisco 4 years ago in the not so savoury outer edges of the Mission District (not the newly savoury inner Mission): $850/mo. It was the best she could do. Even though she's a lawyer this represented about 75% of her salary.
Who makes these lists, monkeys? Really stupid smelly monkeys? |

150 dollars for a 2 bdrm in Istanbul? Where are you? And how did you manage that? After doıng a futile flat hunt around Suadiye/Kadikoy I've decided to take over my friend's 2 bdrm flat for 400 mill (300 usd?) as it was the cheapest and nicest of the few furnished (hell, and unfurnished) ones around in my price range.
Are you sharing? |

Richard: hooey, not honey. Hooey is... bollix, bok, kak, nonsense, merde, etc.
And justme, just reread your post and doofusly realized you said your rent for your room was 150... and since there are 2 rooms it may logically follow that the rent for the flat is 300, thus on par with what I dug up. Am feeling quite imperceptive. Unperceptive. Ummm... geeze. |

Well, I think we should look at the local income and the cost of living in this city. The rent and the food might look cheap for us that is because we are earning a lot more than locals. I think Istanbul is a very expensive city that the cost of clothes, food in the nice restaurants, cars, paterol cost the same with developed countries like Australia . But the average income are a lot less than what we get in developed countries. There are also a huge gap between rich and poor here. |

Those lists of expensive cities are designed for expat. professionals who work and live overseas....but they are nonsense for impoverished ESL teachers/backpackers who live on different standards.
For example it is nonsense to claim that Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) is more expensive than San Francisco.....guess what, Ghost spent a week in Ho Chi Minh City this year, and lived in very clean Mini Hotels with air con and cable t.v. for the equivalent of $6 U.S. per day. Furthermore ghost ate well every day, spending an average of $1.50-$2.00 per meal. Ghost`s total daily spending in Ho Chi Minh city as a tourist was between $10-$15 per day.
The last time ghost stayed in San Francisco, the cheapest hotel he could find was Motel 6, and that cost $75 per night....and that included hearing the hookers in the next room doing their stuff.... Ghost tried to eat cheap in San Francisco...and found `Taco Bell`the best deal, with their `veggie burritos`` meals going for about $5 U.S.....but the total of Ghost`s spending in San Francisco was about $100 U.S. per day, for food, lodging and transport....
In comparison Ghost would make $100 last one week in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Sri Lanka.
The figures are screwed up, because they are only geared to Diplomats who require a Diplomat standard of living with nice villas, maids, and other luxury services.....those standards of living are pretty much the same from Managua (Nicaragua) to Vladivostok... |

I couldn't find information about how exactly they compiled the information for this survey, but I think Anitata is right, it must be based on the cost of living compared to the average income. If that's the case, I think this list could be accurate. Prices in Istanbul have risen so much in the last year or two, but I don't think salaries have. Things are not cheap anymore.
I noticed that Atlanta, GA, USA was pretty far down on the list. I know that Atlanta is a much more expensive city than Istanbul, but salaries are also higher. So, I'm assuming they figured that into the information on the list.

At least in Turkey, I wouldn't call ESL teachers "impoverished". I think we make quite good salaries by local standards and enjoy a very reasonable standard of living. |

Hi Lucy
The comment that was made about us poor tefl teachers like you made me smile . The average Turk lives on less than a third of our wages and those of us who have accomodation and meals as part of our "package" are really living very well .
The so -called improvishment starts with too much time spent down the boozer . |
