I had no idea this thread would receive so many hilarious responses!

While the PC thing to say would be, "I'll go dress-casual (Dockers and a button-up shirt or at least at polo shirt)," I think I'll go ahead with jeans and a decent shirt.

Wearing dirty clothes would never do for me, regardless the dress code. I own several suits and sports jackets, but I'd feel pretentious in those, too. I think jeans and a polo should do the trick.

Not really any dress code but shorts and flip flops are not okay.

"...Zoot suit and saddle shoes. "

Are you makin' fun of me?

There's usually no real dress code. Look around at the CTs and take it from there. More and more women are wearing jeans, and the guys are too. (They probably picked up the increasingly popular jeans and sport coat thing from FTs. Well, it's seems to be becoming popular where I teach).

Look your best. As someone said before, teachers and students do notice. CTs are certain that we're all millionaires, so let 'em think so. A new sweater and a new pair of pants once a month won't break you.

I've only ever seen two contracts that mentioned a dress code. One was for a kind of international program, the other was some strange kindergarten. Any other job I've looked at doesn't mention it.

Why not? I've worked in 4 different universities and none of them have been professional at all. The students certainly don't care (of course I'm wearing clean clothes, I am from a civilized country after all) and wear far worse clothes than I do. The Chinese teachers never interact with me and wouldn't know if I'm a student or a teacher (and most likely don't give a shit either way). When it's hot as hell and there is no air-conditioning or even fans, why are shorts and open shoes (I prefer sandals to "flip-flops" myself) not acceptable? No way I'm sweating it out in a suit for such a monkey job.

Some people just go around judging others on how formal their clothing is and assume everyone must do the same. As others have mentioned, this isn't always the case and isn't necessarily expected of you as a foreign teacher.

Wear stuff that is clean and doesn't have holes in it, I think that's good enough.

I don't necessarily assume "everyone must do the same", however, there's no escaping the fact that very often people ARE judged by their attire.

+1 here

I am not judging my co-workers. I find it appropriate to dress nicely. Gives me the idea, wait for it, I am working. Co-workers are free to do whatever, it is not something I think about.

But in the summer, if you wear real shoes, everyone will constantly ask "aren't your feet hot?" Or they do this where I live.

One friend has to wear business casual. She works in an "international school". (I still have no idea why it is called that because the only international people are the teachers)

Haven't we previously established in a number of threads that an International School is one that offers an international curriculum such as IB, regardless of the percentage of intake who are actually foreigners?

That seems to be the commonly accepted definition.

Yeah, agree, I'm going to sound sexist here but no real issue with women wearing flip flops in the workplace (their feet are usually well taken care of, smaller and generally less offensive) but no-one wants to see big flabby yellow-toenailed hairy man feet.
