For teachers, and especially ESL teachers, probably not... but in general, Canada's economy is much healthier than the UK's. They even missed out on the last recession and all of their banks seem to be sticking to the rules and staying healthy.
But... we digress...

| Why would anyone want to "settle in KSA". Unless they are Bangladeshis or Pakistanis desperate to flee those failed states. |

Well, speaking a bit tongue in cheek, I guess they are failed states, economically speaking. If you are willing to give up the freedom and all other advantages of living in your country to go live in one of the most repressive countries for a job and money, it must really be quite bad back home, economically speaking, no?
Anyway, the word settle implies living permanently in your new country. While millions from poor undeveloped countries would love to live here permanently (and become citizens) if possible, I doubt there are more than a handful--relatively speaking--of Westerners who would choose that if possible. |

Well, scotty is right in that Pakistan and Bangladesh are failed states.
According to the Failed States Index 2013, Pakistan is number 13 and Bangladesh in position 29. The list includes 141 failed states (from Alert to Stable scale).

scotty, how come Russia is a failed state in position 80 and the Magic Kingdom in position 102!
Is it possible that people want to work in a failed state like the Magic Kingdom because of money? |

Sometimes money can cost far too much.

Staying put in Western countries is not on, because one needs PGCE or teaching degree ( this is what I encountered) to earn a living.
Here, siding with the 'unknown', as least there's tax free, guaranteed money,
otherwise wouldn't bother coming here- leaving loved ones behind! |

Ok trapezius...... how many teachers who come to KSA have a teaching degree? With a CELTA/TESOL and any degree you can teach here.
Some people have had 2 or3 different careers before becoming teachers. That's what I meant! |

Are you talking about teaching in general, or teaching ESL? Because if you want to teach K-12 here in one of the Western schools, you do need a teaching qualification from one of the Western countries, such as the PGCE.
In Canada/US, do you need a teaching degree/qualification if you just want to teach ESL at a language school/academy?

In the US, if it is a private school/academy, they can require any or no credentials... as they wish.

I have met converts (reverts !) from developed Western countries who dream of "settling" in KSA. By "settle" I mean become permanent residents.
Most people who dream of doing this are from the truly failed states like Bangladesh and Somalia. |

Dear scot47,
In my time there, I knew over a dozen such converts from Western countries (about 15 or 16 ).
There was only one that wasn't disillusioned by Saudi after living there, and that guy (and his wife) were both truly bonkers.
He had a house in Turkey that was next to a graveyard, and he would speak with relish of being able, at night, to hear the agonized cries of the dammed souls of the "bad Muslims" and infidels.

Scott and John....
Don't be silly! For majority of Muslims this is next to 'heaven', so please stop with the belittling- for "converts" and "reverts" alike!
Failed states, etc..... Greece, Poland, Italy etc... are failed states.... Bangladesh, Somalia etc.... are war torn countries which makes them 'failed states'. |

Dear CANDLES,
So, how many converts from Western countries have you known who felt Saudi was "heaven?"
I was there for 19 years. How long have you been there?

John |
