but the pool is segregated?? and it is not a compound as there are no gates?

All public areas will be segregated, families, women in one area, men in another. This includes pools and restaurants. It includes public transport (planes, trains, buses), public parks etc. I almost guarantee your apartments will be walled like a compound. You might have a bus that takes you back and forth from the department stores and supermarkets.

what can women wear on this on campus housing area when they walk around in common areas? Do they need to wear the headscarf?

You will see expats not wearing headscarves at the supermarkets, but they will definitely be wearing abayas. The Saudi women you see will be wearing full covering on their heads, faces and abayas at all places. Be prepared to have to wear a scarf and abaya on university grounds at all times in public. What you have to wear for sure, you will find out when you get there.

KFUPM doesn't sound bad at all, the salary, work hours and holidays but still can't get this concept of campus housing, that's not a compound. Can anyone elaborate on it taking in mind I have never been to a gulf country.
The university will have students training for jobs in an important sector of the country. These are the students that either take all of their education seriously or they get rid of them. They will be good students. I have experience with that. Although they will still cheat Laughing

You live on campus; this means you live among Saudis and other expats. You wife will have to wear an abaya and the local supermarket closes for prayer time. This is not a place where you will be able to sunbathe or go to the pool with your family.

KFUPM is a great place to make and save money, teach fairly hard-working students and work in a stable environment. The directors of both English departments (ELD and PYP) do a good job and are both good guys.

In summary, KFUPM is a great place to work, but forget about the bbq by the pool lifestyle.Go to the UAE or Oman if that is what your are looking for.

Women do drive on campus (when I say campus I mean the faculty housing area of the campus, which is where the pool and store are) at KFUPM. Women can go out on campus without an abaya, but they do run the risk of being harassed by faculty members. It can really shake the wives up when some dude with a beard yells at them and tells them to wait while he calls security. It was our experience that the security guards were rather on the side of the females and it was the male faculty members with the beard who were escorted away. Nonetheless, such situations are not pleasant. My wife was very bold, but she was shaken up a time or two.

To address the bikini question; no women cannot wear bikinis at the KFUPM women's pool. As a matter of fact, unless a woman wears a one-piece swimming suit and lycra shorts that go down to the knees, she will probably be ceaselessly harassed or forbidden from entering by the female lifeguards. This was one of the hardest things for my wife to bear. The lifeguards were nasty and my wife simply gave up going to the pool.

People were really nice on campus and we found life just fine there. You have to remember that you are a stranger in a strange land, and you really must expect some inconveniences while living there.

My wife, two small kids and I lived at KFUPM for five years, and we were quite happy there. If you need further details, PM me.
