DM you made some good points. I am looking to go teach English for a few years (possibly more) but am looking at universities exclusively. I think it might be better to teach DGAF students for the first time. I would feel bad if I wasn't that good on my first year and taught paying adults who really want to learn.

Also I find a big university to walk around, with a gym/track/pool to use a big perk. I assumed there is no curfew for FTs?
I am about to turn 23 and just graduated with a bachelors in international business, so I guess I am more accustom to campus life. Plus having thousands of people on campus my age to talk and become friends with also sounds nice. Although I don't want to be that creepy teacher who hangs out with students a lot, not sure how Chinese view this but in the USA it would be looked at as weird.

Yeah it does look creepy, particularly if you invite groups back to your apartment and urge them to repent. All weather pools are a boon in the north although take care not to be seen as perving on the females.
Many of the better places have indoor stadiums and there are always students shooting hoops.
Basketball seems to be regarded as an OK fraternisation activity.

NS, I'll PM you on this very subject another time. Found some discouraging news about a particular public university Sad

Re "creepy FT's" hanging out with students, a good friend of mine, married, hangs out doing various sports with a group of students almost daily. He's much loved by them, and he likes the students as well. If someone told him he was "creepy" for doing this (not to imply you did), he might punch them in the face. Some normal guys (and gals, I'd imagine) just like the uni environment and like being around students. In the US, they're often called coaches. The vast majority aren't "creepy" or "weird."

OK BB I'll wait for your PM.
The low or non-existent barriers to the FT world in China mean that some guys get in who would have been cut off at the pass at home.
The Tech U we have discussed has a nice all weather pool and lido-type relaxing area.
My comments were partly in jest. Smile

Totally realize your comments being in part in jest, and IIRC correctly you weren't the first poster to bring in the whole "creepy" POV. The timing was just unfortunate: Said friend's mother just passed away, so he's home for her memorial and we finally had time to catch up just today. So I was perhaps a bit sensitive. He's regular guy, and genuinely enjoys being around college kids. Nothing weird at all. I don't think all FT's should be expected to teach their classes only, and spend the entire balance of their time either alone in their apartment or in the nearest bar (not to imply you implied anything of the sort).

"Lido-type?" That's a new term for me! I'll have to Google it.

This has turned into a fantastic thread, btw, NS.

Just got off the plane in Chengdu about an hour ago...can already tell this is going to be nuts. Got a nice glimpse/taste of that smog right off the plane even though it's the middle of the night. I'm about 20+ minutes outside the city and the town of Tong'an seems a lot tinier than expected to say the least. But woohoo, I made it!

All good BB.
Wish the thread had more contributors to the poll.
To the extent we can take lessons from it, the poll indicates that the advice and comments on Dave's are helpful.

@ ResearchID, Are you working at language mill or private "international school" for kids?

Sorry for the late response! I'm working in the International section of a private school.

To Tong'an? Please do! I need some company Very Happy

The students are at a pretty low level here, and while the administration seems to be perfectly ok with me teaching from the (fairly abstract, imo) books, I would like to do more than that if I can hack it. Lesson planning in this kind of environment is a little tougher than anticipated. Not to mention the classroom technology has not quite made it here yet. Old computers, cassette players, etc.
