Hello all
How strange that my first post is largely about quitting a job which I don't even have yet! I'm quitting my job in the UK and am off early next year - my plan is to work for at least 9 months teaching but not a year as I will probably want to use the last 3 months of a RTW ticket elsewhere. I'm planning to go in with one of the big companies and then take it from there. Can any of you helpful folks help me with the following - I have done searches but these are questions I haven't yet found the answers to:
1. Of the big four, in reading their website they can be a bit vague about pay during the training period. ECC says 1,000 yen per hour, NOVA doesn't refer to it, but therefore imply that you are trained on full starter pay? Is this something to watch?
2. I gather it is possible to hand in notice at Nova etc. and move on. Does this apply to accomodation too? Does this have the same notice period as the job itself? Is this the same at all the big four?
3. Accomodation elsewhere (e.g. Gaijin house) - does there tend to be key money/deposit even in shared Gaijin houses?
4. If you leave Westgate is it possible to get into one of the Eikaiwa's after that? I gather the visa is OK, but do they recruit from inside Japan?

Pay at NOVA is a probation salary for the first two financial pay periods and depending when you arrive it can be three. Not sure of figure but i believe its around 2/3rds of full salary for the probation period

At NOVA you are required to give at least a months notice though 2 weeks is possible. You give up the accomodation as soon as you leave your job.

NO key money I believe is paid in gaijin houses but a monthly rent. Average is about 50-60,000 yen a month.

Visa at Westgate is for one year but the teaching contract is for 3-4 months. they dont expect you will renew your contract as you have to wait 2-3 months to start work again. technically with a valid visa is t is possible to find another job and work on it until the visa expires. Dont forget the school may ask you to sign a one year contract but the legal term remaining on your visa is 7 months. You have to factor in job hunting and interview time as well. Yes, they do. It's on their web site. Granted, their tables for salaries are goofy, and they need to fix their decimal points, but here is the lowdown. Depending on location, you could get 250,000 to 259,000 yen/month during the training period. After that, you salary would rise to 255,000 to 320,000, depending on location and your qualifications.

Your visa stays with you until it expires, so you can quit and still keep it. If you have company-sponsored housing, you will have to vacate when you resign. You don't have to take company-sponsored housing, though.

There may be a 25,000 yen deposit in some cases. The average rent depends on where you live, and could run from 50,000 to 80,000 yen/month.
If you go with other places (like LeoPalace21), you could end up paying the whole rent for your stay up front, plus some service charges. |

Can't you work for 3 and travel for 9... or even 12 ?  |
