I know something about EdEx, too. I was paid more than 13,000 riyals. A friend was just over 14,000 riyals. Okay, we had the qualifications.. My friend's salary went up by 500 riyals per month for the second year.

I feel bad saying something good about the company! They are a complete mess in terms of organisation, but money-wise they are okay.

I don't think many companies would pay for your flight home if you resigned..

My bolding. I disagree, most companies are contractually obligated to pay for your flight home if you resign within the terms of your agreement. If you do this then you are not breaking your contract as within its terms you or the employer are within your rights to stop your employment before the term of the contract ends.

Of course whether the company upholds its end when you cut your ties with it is another issue. I expect most of the 'bad' companies' management would rather you gone and forgotten and make leaving as difficult as they possibly could. That seems to be de rigueur for all crappy TEFL employers the world over.

Not so. The typical contract specifies annual flights over the summer break whereby you work a year (or within a timeframe specified by the employer per the contract start date) and are provided either a one-way flight if you're not continuing your employment, or a roundtrip ticket if you're returning on a renewed contract.

Obviously, if you're on a business/work visit visa with a dodgy contracting company, you can leave whenever without notice but are on your own for the cost of the flight out of the Kingdom. However, generally, employment contracts either state that you're responsible for your departing flights if either party should terminate the contract for whatever reason, or it's not addressed in the agreement at all, in which case, you're still very likely responsible for your airfare. Otherwise, there's no incentive for you to stay and fulfill your obligation, and it becomes a financial burden on the employer in terms of time recruiting/hiring you and managing costs associated with your employment. In fact, in some cases, you may have to refund the employer for visa costs, unearned expenses such as a housing allowance, an advance on salary, etc. Anyway, regardless of the visa type, for those with accompanying dependents, paying out of pocket for flights can be quite expensive.

Brilliant! You've answer half of your own question. Makes one wonder why you were asking about the difference without supplying the information you already had in the first place. Maybe someone else can give us information about KFUPM now.

BTW, I received the same salary and increase as your friend (minus the bonuses, vacation, tickets promised) when I was with Edex. I guess it's all relative; but, I found that I could make as much money in other countries that were far less difficult to live in than KSA. And these jobs were with reputable organizations. I wouldn't recommend going to work at Edex for 13,000 SAR. Anyone with qualifications to get that pay from Edex can do better.

Unfortunately EDEX have spread their tendrils to IPA too. They are moving into the ELT market in an unprecedented and stellar speed. I think their leader is addressed with a 'Heil' prefix.

Contractors have spread their octopoid grip to most areas of TEFLing in KSA. A ghastly systems which enriches the contractors but impoverishes everyone else and that includes the students who are subject to mo0re poorer education and training.
