Is it correct that American citizens do not need a visa to go to Japan for 90 days? I thought a tourist visa was required, but it seems not to be from what I'm reading. I just wanted to confirm this and ask if this would affect getting a work visa while over there in any way. I've heard that you will not be allowed to change your status while in Japan as a tourist. Is this correct? How do people who arrive in Japan without jobs go about securing one and then obtaining a work visa? Is this advisable nowadays?

Thank you.

Changing status from tourist to work visa is no problem, although it can take a bit of time to get the documents. You don't need to leave the country, or anything like that.

Be careful about companies that ask you to work while waiting for the documents to arrive. Sometimes, they forget to apply for the documents. Sometimes, they forget to pay you....

So it's true that American citizens do not need a tourist visa and we will be on the same status as people with a tourist visa?

When you land, just join the queue at Customs and Immigration, and they'll put a 90-day visa stamp in your passport.
