My friend is currently negotiating a contract with Marconi and there is talk of a percentage increase as danger money. So I guess it even applies to us lowly teachers. |

My suspicion is that, as always, 'we' will be at the end of the list. First they will try to bring in more subcontinentals and other Arabs on the cheap. Perhaps the few places that are adament on 'native speakers?'

1,000 extra??? For teachers?
That's pretty good, I must say.
I agree with VS that more and more places will start hiring locals of subcontinentals. I would say this is particularly true for "ladies' colleges". Nothing wrong with that, I suppose: in current circumstance I would be wary of hiring "Westerners" if there was a viable alternative. |

Gee - an extra 1000 pounds a month AND the right to carry weapons. Where are they putting their ads nowadays - in "Soldier of Fortune"?

Perhaps they're trying to entice disgruntled mercenaries in Iraq?
However, I hear the money's better in Iraq - and it's probably not all that much more dangerous either.
And alcohol isn't banned either! |

I think you're right. I know of one ESL job there that pays $75K + $5k after 6 and 12 months. Of course, the engineers and techs are getting around $200K if the articles I've read are accurate.
I think you're right about the danger issue, too. |

Well the BA boys are probably on about 50,000 pounds now plus all the other benefits which is good for an English teacher.......
They had jobs for sap trainers (which is what i do these days) advertised for 200,000 US in Iraq.
Tempting, but no thanks. |

BA is British Aerospace of course. One thousand quid for all Westerners, without regard to salary. Of course our BA guys are all Saudis, so they got a one-time 20K riyals.
What does 'mercenary' mean? Something like 'person who lives and works outside his country, and whose politics I do not like?'
Jobs in Iraq? Tell me more! |

British Aerospace should be "BAe".
"BA" is British Airways. Or Bachelor of Arts.
NITPICKING - it is an occupational hazard ! |

Sorry, "BAe" has been a thing of the past since 2000. It changed its name from British Aerospace to BAE Systems. I should know, because, the previous year, I did an MBA dissertation (thesis) on the impact of mergers and acquisitions in the global aerospace industry, and I focused on the then-BAe as a case study. I even went down to UK BAe HQ at Farnborough and interviewed one of the top dogs there. A very enlightening day, indeed - and it helped my dissertation no end!
I wonder if writing a thesis on the phenomenon of NITPICKING would be worthy of consideration at a university. (Any takers?) |

Did it get you a job ? I have the feeling that the MBA is not the ticket to paid employment that it used to be. |

Indeed, sad to say, but it did not get me a job simply because I had very limited work experience, and the experience appears to be what counts for many employers these days, whether in business or in other sectors. Many people do go out to get higher qualifications, and so employers' criteria for employment will undoubtedly focus more on the experiential side of a person's career rather than his or her credentials on paper.
I will say, however, that, here in Wuhan, China, where I have been teaching for nearly three whole years, I was headhunted earlier this year by a private college to teach business English precisely because of my MBA. I am presently under contract with a school in the public sector until the end of next January, though, so I am not able to teach with that college on a full-time basis as yet.
Nevertheless, I am keeping my options open and will not necessarily place that college at the top of my list of alternative schools to teach at for my next job merely because it has looked upon my MBA favourably (at least from the publicity and marketing viewpoint - a foreign teacher of English with an MBA in Wuhan is extremely rare!). |
