Haha! I see what you did there. +1 Laughing

I said this a bit differently to the queue jumper at the 7-11 last night.

NO! WEI!

Is Happy Town a misnomer? Could it be called Unhappy Town instead?

And where do they come up with these names? Helluva name for a school methinks.

Warm regards,

The problem is that you are totally at the mercy of the school while working on a non-work L visa.
If they refuse to pay you - what you gonna do?
If they say after 3 weeks we've reconsidered our FT needs - what you gonna do?
If having you there is a defacto trial and they say you're unsuitable - what you gonna do?
Just because some provinces seem to be able to get L to Z conversions in HK, doesn't mean your school will follow through.

This. Exactly this. This is the golden advice of the whole thread that should never be forgotten.

according to their ad, they provide "Sponsored Z visa."

but on their website FAQ:

"The easiest and cheapest way to go about a "Z" Visa for China is by getting a simple "L" Tourist Visa and then switching this over once you're here. Regardless of what you may have heard, it is the most common way to go about it (the majority of us have done this, China works different than home). If you have a problem doing this then let us know, please do not decide not to come because of it."

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Because of this, I'd give this place a miss.

Are you sure this isn't Disney English, because this sounds like a Mickey Mouse move to me.

Haha! See what I did there?

IN SUMMARY: "easiest and cheapest" does not equal "best and and most desirable and most headache-free".

It could be, but that'll cost ya extra--you'll need some guanxi for that or if you don't have the guanxi--for you my friend we will throw that in for the cost of a few hongbaos. The palms are itchy and they need to be greased! I do this for only you and for nobody else!

The only way I would go on a tourist visa is if the school paid for my flight upfront as they do in Korea.

...did....

Not sure if that has been a widespread policy there for at least a decade now. Enough schools have been burned by no shows or crap teachers. Between that and no real need to offer as many incentives to get the recently graduated over to the country I'd almost think you could count on one hand the number of Korean schools now willing to pay airfares upfront.

I agree with many of the sentiments here, asking for a teacher to come over on an L visa is typically because the school has an immediate itch it can't scratch following the paperwork.. I don't think this is really fair to say the school or the offer isn't legit though they won't be drugging you and sending you out to an organ farm. They're just not following the correct method.

With the new rules coming requiring the CBC before processing etc i wouldn't be surprised to see more of this.

If schools can find any work arounds to Z visa processing either by trips to HK or other back doors at their local PSB they usually will want to use them at least in squeeze like deadbeat replacement. Usually in the end though you still have your work permit.
