What do you think the best type of job would be for an American with a BA in English, a 120-hour online TEFL certification, and one year of experience teaching ESL in the States? Could I find a job at a university?

Would you all just recommend emailing universities directly, saying I'm interested in any possible job openings for the spring semester, and including my resume, scans of my certification, diploma, and passport, and a picture of myself? It seems like the vast majority of the job postings on this site, SeriousTeachers, etc. are for chain schools.

I think for Feb start, the emailing route is the one for you.
Seriousteachers.com will have uni ads so I would load my stuff on there as a precaution. It doesn't cost anything and you've got your documents scanned.

esl teachers' board, anesl.com, abroadchina.org, networkesl.com (but watch out for bait and switch) .
All these have uni jobs, and some may give the school's email contact.
I think emailing random unis will produce a lot of 'mail undeliverable' and no response (email address is 5 years out of date). Typically Chinese unis' websites are appalling to navigate, have broken links and hopeless 'English ' introductions . But some posters here recommend the email-shot route.

You might want to stretch that 1 year of teaching experience into 2 years of teaching experience...just sayin'.

Only if you want to teach in one of the stricter cities. In most places, OP is overqualified!

maj,

If you are looking at coming to China for the spring term (end of Feb/beginning of March), please be aware that most colleges will be finishing the current term at the end of December/beginning of January. Then they will shut their offices and EVERYONE will be on holiday until at least mid-February. The spring term seems far off, but most colleges have their hiring done by the end of December. So don't procrastinate!

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the last three of those sites! I have encountered some of the problems you mentioned about receiving "mail undeliverable" messages from many of the schools.

Your qualifications are fine - but your experience is not enough.

Immigration will require you to have two years of full time work experience POST graduation - ideally as a teacher.
