Dear Sasha,

Is that really a word? I got curious about the meaning but couldn't find it in any online dictionary.

I did find this, however - "circumoral
[sur′kəmôr′əl]
Etymology: L, circum + os, mouth
pertaining to the area of the face around the mouth."

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat

It is real enough, though, alas, quite dated. Have a look at this poem from the seventeenth century, which contains a few words that the naughty word filter would beep out. But is also contains circummortal.

Best wishes

Dear Sasha,

I wonder if anyone else has ever used it:

"Admittedly Herrick softens the demand – but in a rather curious way. The word ‘circummortal’ is the poet’s own coining, and means (once we unpick the etymology) ‘around what is mortal’."

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat

Whether of not anyone else uses it doesn't change its status as one of my favourite words! : ) Let's popularise it, if that makes it seem like a more authentic word, then...

Best wishes

S
