I think I know how most will respond but.... What is our job here?

1. Walk in and teach ESL and leave?

2. Try to open their minds?

3. Change their perceptions and attitudes toward education?

How about changing #1 to "Walk in and leave?" This might better reflect our role of presenting a foreign face to the students for a while. In Saudi, I'm not so sure about the "and teach ESL" part.

Forget 2 and 3; but, I might add a 4th about learning something new yourself.

never thought I'd see the day when, of all people, scot47 would question someone's apparently irrational opinion on a particular forum topic.

well, well, well...

1 is absurd. Everyone knows the answer is 99.

As for Sicklyman - I have escaped from the asylum. He is still there ! In his defence he will of course tell us that he is idyllically happy and earning a zillion riyals a month !

happy? Yes. A zillion? No.

It's actually a quintillion Scot. We've had to upgrade our quantities since you left.

The same as in all of the Gulf, your job is the three B's:

1. Babysit

2. Bank the money

3. Bail out...when you've had enough of 1. or have achieved enough of 2.

Your job is to persuade all of them the moon is really made of green cheese. And that only Presbyterians will be saved.

Nobody asked me, but for what it's worth - 2 & 3 are inappropriate pretty much everywhere, IMO.

Nitaqat.

Now it is their job. They want to teach English and other subjects like maths, sciences, and health sciences by themselves through the Saudiaization Programme. Eventually they will end up with poorly equipped Saudi National teachers and instructors that will do the same thing we are, which is nothing. So in the end it all works out to their advantage and right into their lifestyles. All students will get full marks and graduate universities with honours degrees to become managers in companies that cater to no one, because there will be no one but themselves here.

Good plan. You idiots.
