The air in Qingdao is better then other cities on some days.

Over the last few days we've had the following conversations:
hmmm, that smells like someone's coated meat with plastic then burnt it hmmm that smells like trainers on fire
hmmm that smells like McDonalds with a backnote of cat vomit
hmmm that smells like someone's set a poo truck's on fire
hmmm that smells like nail varnish remover

In the past year and a half we've only once said hmmm can you smell the sea and that was when all the algae was washing up on the beach.

Last year there were at least 10 days we didn't take our boy out of the house because the air was visibly yellow.

We know if the wind is coming from inland -which it rarely does out in Laoshan- the air will be disgusting.

Saying that I'd rather be here than in Shanghai or Beijing.

If the breeze is off the sea as it usually is on summer afternoons, QD is good.
As mamba says when it is from the north west as it tends to be now it is dirty and COLD.
Beats Shanghai though.

Any special types of masks to consider? Also a decent apartment would be clean with an air filter or purifier?

Chinese people sometimes wear cotton -type face masks outside , but I think this relates to a belief about breathing cold air being bad for you, rather than a serious attempt to keep out pollution particles. Something like a HEPA mask would probably do it.
Don't think I would ever use any mask outside .

I use a home made 'fan /HEPA filter ' in my apartment (website link was provided on this forum somewhere on how to make it ). Who knows whether it helps or not.

Air polution is at 'hazardous ' levels in much of Jiangsu today , inc one reading of 788 in Huai'an (!) - it could be a misreading; anything over 300 is considered hazardous. But the air feels really bad today.

All of Jiangsu was gross today. This afternoon looked like Mars, and apparently parts of Shanghai cancelled school. AQI readings for Suzhou are currently sitting around 600. Mad

Air in Qingdao incredibly bad today. Much worse than anything we had last year and this is just the start of winter FFS.

QD's AQI for today: Literally scary and hazardous.

I think many assume, bc it's a coastal city, the air must be relatively clean there...

We're 500m from the sea out in Laoshan with a mountain on either side, pretty much the ruddy countryside. Can't see more than 50m this morning.

Has anyone used one of the Totobobo masks? The ones we bought here just aren't cutting it.

Buggar, pressed submit instead of preview, the fumes must be getting to me.

There's been no wind the last few days and the smog's just sitting there like a blanket, temperatures are falling and the bad air's getting trapped in the sea fret. Same thing happened last year. Waiting for the wind to pick up, forecast over the weekend but it's going to be a long winter.

Upside the sunset sure is pretty.

Not right.
You get a definite afternoon breeze in Qingdao in summer.
This declines as the winter advances due to the lack of land warming.
Seems like the more northerly cold and crap laden winds from Mongolia have set in earlier this year.
I was out at Jiushui Road for my last gig at the Hotel Management College.
That's kinda towards the airport from Laoshan and definitely not near the beach.
Ah well Spring Break will be here in no time and off you go to the bracing climes of PP or Bangkok.

mamba, I owe you a PM or two and will be getting back to. Great to see you (and NS) active on the board.

Hope your boy is doing well and the air clears soon.

Hello BlueBlood,

Yeah the boy's doing well especially with his Victorian complexion after not going out, looks all Dickensian just in time for Xmas. Might strap on a top hat and send him out to sweep the chimneys.

I hope the air clears soon too. Playing havoc with my smoking habit. Cough cough.

Mamba
