Ugh. Well when I naively began my China job hunt recently I cheerfully emailed my photo, resume, 2 recommendation letters, copy of notarized diploma, tefl certificate, and uncensored passport info page scan to probably ~30 random recruiters/"schools" on job boards.

I've just recently read about the recruiter/scammers selling this info when they don't get you a job to identity thefts or doing whatever with it, and in some cases, foreigners being called to the bank to be accused of tens of thousands of dollars in credit card fraud, resulting in paying or being deport, etc you know what I mean.

What I want to know is what can they do with my info? Just use it for importing cars tax free (does this affect me?) or could they pull the credit card fraud or something else ridiculous on me?

I'm still outside of China looking for a job and currently talking to some of the recruiters which I now severely question their trustworthiness. I realize now I shouldn't have used recruiters but I used them in korea and didn't think twice about it when switching countries. Should I tell the recruiters I got a job in another country? Would that make my docs any less valuable?

Sorry I probably wrote too much, I am basically wondering the extent of what could happen (credit card fraud?) if my docs fall into the wrong hands and if there is anything I can do. Thanks

I wouldnt lose any sleep over it TBH. I really really wouldnt.

Most (IMHO) fraud, the vast majority of fraud, isnt from Chinese recruiters using your passport details. They spend too much time pretending that the school they are selling to you is in the heart of the city when its actually 75 minutes away by fast bus. Professional fraudsters can get the required details in a manner far easier than opening recruitment agencies.

If you are worried then photoshop out the passport number next time. But I really wouldnt worry about what you have already sent.

I don't recall seeing any stories on here or other places about people having their identities stolen like that. Probably far more likely to happen in your own country where the thieves can use your details more easily.
