Hi,

I'm doing an informal survey of why teachers choose to teach in China, it's for a presentation about teacher retention.

I would like to know what factors brought you to China and made you want to teach here

Ive gone for culture ... but its a fairly broad definition. The others certainly dont qualify for me.

Culture for me means living in a country / working in a classroom where I am respected for what I do and where I am given a certain amount of freedom to teach the way I believe to be correct, in an environment that is conducive to language learning. The teaching environment is my main consideration.

Added to this is my overall work package of low hours, convenience and relatively low cost of living.

Adventure for me. I just wanted to go somewhere different and see what happened. I had lost a few family members and close friends in the years before, and got to thinking that life was too short to dream about adventure and never do it. I teach because I had teaching experience and I like doing it, and also it was easy to get a job. I have no plans to ever return to the UK, but I doubt my wife, who is Chinese, and I will stay in China forever either. More adventure beckons and we both love to travel.

Terrific poll but it needs an "Other" category. That would have been me, so I went with "Adventure" as that seemed the closest. lol!

Looking forward to seeing more replies to this thread.

None of the above , would be my answer too . It is really just about finding a decent and interesting way to earn a living, and get a comfortable home, in a Uni , without too much hassle, and without having to teach children.
The teaching and work environment make or break the experience for me, so adventure and culture are important but secondary .
Career development is not a priority (obviously?).

Pretty much why I came to China also. A better quality of life (for me) than what the west offered.

There are two reasons 99% of males do anything, ever.

1. money
2. women

That's it.

Where is the "women" option

I nearly put an option for women/girls but decided that that would come under culture.

I didn't put 'other' as an option because it is pretty meaningless, if you can't squeeze your reason into one of the options then leave a reply with it and I will take it into consideration.

other options could have included "find a wife" or "easy long-stay visa".

but you really need an an option for "all of the above"?

i'da checked that one, cause i'm here for the whole package.
(..............except for career development.)

I'm not sure I understand that point, it's my understanding all residency permits are for 1 year (for teachers) as that's how long their contracts are. Some may be on two, but I wouldn't say China has an 'easy long-stay visa'

easy in that you need but one visa for essentially unlimited
residence permit renewals. (rp's are valid for the length of the
contract) easier than constantly doing business visa runs to
hong kong, if that's even still possible. easier still than
trying to stay in china for years on many many many 30-day
tourist visas. (ming bei le salad dressing?)

Ah, I see. Though our stay in China is only as long as we work. No real 'retirement' options - if that's something a person would want.

I wanted to tick two, but money prevailed.

The only folks I could see actually retiring here are those with a Chinese wife and kids...and they can just go under a family visa/RP. Renew it annually until dead....

You (technically) can't work under that RP.

There is a 5 year RP(family) available after you put in 5 or so 1 year stints. Or at least there was.
