Sad ...
Anyone considering going to Libya should ensure good security from their employers; I mean an assigned driver, high security at home & work as well as an internal network of keeping in touch!
Salaries are a whole other matter, loosing your life for £1,000 - £2,000 is just not worth it!

I advise any teacher thinking about Libya to stay away unless they are going through Smart, who arrange direct-hire contracts with oil companies who provide dedicated drivers for airport transfers. Oil camps have their own airports, so you will never be in the cities and you will live on camps protected by lots of locals, who know outsiders and are armed to the teeth. |

Just found out on the qt that they were contractors for Deutschman, not teachers. They were not supposed to be off camp after sunset and the area is a well-known hotbed of former regime loyalists. I've seen the photo. They were executed with shots to the back of the head. My Libyan contact lives near there.
Don't go off camp. |

People here need to seriously understand that there are 2 kinds of threat;
1-Indirect-ie being in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting clipped in the crossfire.
2-Direct-being a target because you are a foreigner. This does not necessarily mean Islamists, it can also be former Gaddafi loyalists causing disruption or simple robbery.
FOLLOW THE FCO GUIDELINES. IF YOU ARE HERE.
1-Don't go off camp.
2-Don't travel after dark.
3-If you travel, make sure there's a back up car and let people know your itinerary.
4-Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
5-If carjacked, give them the car.
6-If robbed, give them everything.
7-If kidnapped, play the quiet man.
8-Don't announce travel on social media sites.
9-Don't take a taxi from the airport. Stay there until an assigned driver picks you up even if it means staying there all night.
10-Don't trust strangers. |
