Hi All,

My husband had an interview last week with King AbdulAziz University in Jeddah. He has a masters in TEFL and a CELTA and said the interview went ok but they wanted to see his MA certificate which he gets in December 2012.

How long do they usually take in getting back to you? Just want to know if we should pursue other options or wait for this. How long should I wait?

Thanks in advance.

Dear UmmYusuf,

"How long do they usually take in getting back to you? Just want to know if we should pursue other options or wait for this. How long should I wait?"

Sorry - but that's impossible for anyone to say with even a "ballpark figure." About the only thing you can be virtually certain of is that it will take between quite a while and forever (i.e. never.)

Getting back to you is not a Saudi priority.

Regards,
John

Frankly, the hold up is at your end. If further action is pending receipt of your husband's MA diploma, then apparently, everything's in limbo until he presents it to them in December. Even if he applies for other positions, I'd guess that those potential employers will most likely need to see his scanned diploma as well.

KAU and most job in KSA will want to see the diploma before they even give you an offer. They will also need to see it and get it authenticated before you are given a visa for work.

If you are still interested in December, send it to them.

The first term (we have four, 7-8 week terms per year at the ELI at KAU) is over on Oct. 17th. It is always in the first term that we have the most students and need the most teachers. For example, when a student takes the placement test and is put into a level four class - our last level, he will be finished with his English requirement (unless, of course, he wants to major in English) and leaves the ELI after his/our first term. As the year grows longer, the fewer students we have and, thusly, the fewer teachers we need. I wish we could adjust the student/teacher ratio for each class, but this would mean that we use common sense and logic in a timely way. This does not happen all the time. Last year, during our last term, we had quite a few instructors with no teaching duties.

Your husband might have to wait longer then the two of you were planning. I hope thats not the case and good luck!
Very Happy

Thank you icanupp1964,

Although the advice is good, it is a bit depressing as we dont really want to wait until Sep 2013 to go! lol

Thanks for the heads up on how it works though

I graduated in December and am still waiting for my university to email me a scan of the certificate/diploma and send me the hard copy. Can't get a job offer until I email a scan of the cert/dip.

I know of universities that take months to provide this document... especially if you don't graduate with the usual spring crowd.

The good news is that the ELI at KAU hires all year long. I have seen teachers show up in May. I would send in the application once you have all the documents in hand. KAU does require that there is at least one (mostly two) years of teaching experience after a person's last university degree was earned, but I have seen this requirement waved. If you are a native born speaker of English, the chances of getting a waiver are much better.

Hey Icanupp1964,

I know this is somewhat of an unfair question, but do you like it there?

Pooroldedgar, better to PM me. The short answer is that it beats all the other positions I've held in the 13 years of teaching ESL, but I have had some real crap jobs.
