Is this typical? Actually my Z PM is valid until Feb. 28. I asked for an extension way back in early November (I've worked at a public college in GZ two years now) and I got it, no problem at all. I signed (as did all relevant parties including the lawyer) the contract in December, and the application was made for my RP ten days ago. Since then I haven't heard zip from my FAO however. Last year all this was done by 1/15.
So OK, as today is the 14th I suppose I'm being paranoid. And I'm definitely a nervous Nelly about things like visas (not good for China I know). But how long does it usually take for the application to go through? My FAO said three to five days but it's been 10 as I said.
The problem is this: I thought of trying to get a 'back up' position in the event I couldn't get my visa renewed, but I don't want to alienate a college I might like to work for in the future by being offered a job then turning them down. Also, you need a Letter of Release and a Letter of Recommendation (or so I've heard) if you want to continue all your goodies like the FEC and an in-country transfer, so I can't anger my employer here either.
All of which is too late for me anyway. I'm on good terms with my school, so I don't think there's a problem. But if I do lose all my visa docs, I think I'll spend the next term in Laos on a Business Visa and start job hunting all over again.
Experiences anyone?

Sorry. RP not PM. Embarassed Residency Permit.

I don't drink, so I'm not drunk. I thought I explained it well, guess not: I'm on a March to March contract. The contract extending my visa was signed and sealed in December. Some other docs were sent. My FAO sent the application to the PSB (I imagine that's where it goes, right?) ten days ago. She said it take 3-5 working days. But it's now been ten. And that's OK if that's normal. This being China and close to New Year, I'm sure it is.

OK- so you're saying just wait, and wait, and wait. Well I have over a whole month to wait. So, I'll do that. But not comfortably. Hard to make plans without that stamp.

And doesn't everyone think of a Plan B? What's wrong with Laos? Would I be better off getting a job in a hectic English mill or 'training school' (no offense anyone) weighed down with a one year March to March contract?

Hope that makes sense- not drunk, just panicky. No time! Before China I was on a permanent visa in Japan for 20 years. Never thought about visas. Could still go back there. No way!

@chinatimes
I think you're under the impression that I'm not in China. I've been teaching at a college in GZ for two years now. I'm waiting on an extension.

Or you're the one that's drunk...

The current time frame for extending an RP in Dongguan is 3 weeks; at any time of the year. The five-day renewal period ended back in September; throughout China. Now, the PSB holds your passport for 3 weeks. There are many postings on the internet about this.

In any event, your FAO should have given you one of the new style receipts for your passport, which is A4 paper size and incorporates your photo. That receipt has the date on which your passport was given to the PSB and the date on which your passport can be collected.

It is very hard to get any kind of clarity with Chinese Immigration, as it changes every other week. Holding my passport for three weeks? I'm leaving for Japan for a two-week visit on Monday so I guess it's pointless to get it renewed now anyway. That means that I'll be back on the 3rd and have only 24 days- barely enough time- to get it done. I have to add however that the PSB does not have my passport, we're still waiting to be cleared to go down there.

So I am not being paranoid after all- I could in fact miss the window, unless an extension saves me. My FAO seems to know nothing about this. I'll tell her tomorrow. It would also be prudent to plan a Plan B.

I don't know if I'll get an A4 paper or not instead of those stickers that take one full page of my passport each, but at this point they can tag my ear for all I care. I just want some peace of mind.

Thanks Zhejiang

Yes, I see that now. Sorry. I'm just jittery, while he's out on some cowboy fantasy.

It's all good.

The A4 size paper is simply a receipt proving that your passport is with the PSB. Reportedly, you can use the receipt in any situation where you would normally have to show your passport including (I was told, but I have my doubts) as I.D. on domestic flights. You have to give the receipt back to the PSB when you collect your passport.

Your R.P. will be another sticker in your passport.

It works... I have even flown on a paper handwritten with a seal stamped when I lost a passport during a motorcycle ride...China can be a great country sometimes with its ability to overlook minor "hick-ups" with paperwork and lost documents...

If you still have your passport then the school is probably waiting for the FEC to be renewed, once that's done you or the school apply for the RP to be renewed.

Provided that you have the FEC then you can apply for a renewal of the RP one day before the old one expires. 24 days is plenty of time.

You might want to ask your FAO if the wait is due to the FEC.

Ok, I am trying to make sense of this now. You are saying, when someone types "PM" I should already know that they mean "RP"?

No, you're supposed to ignore it or ask the poster what he/she means (obviously it's not 'post meridiem'). You are a language teacher I presume? Do you make fun of your students as well? You're NOT supposed to harass the person, as you childishly continue to do.

Every village has its idiot and so does every forum apparently. I'd suggest that your going back to living your life would be preferable to wasting it on mocking some poor soul worried about his visa.

Thanks. That's exactly what happened today- my FAO told me that my FEC was renewed and in her possession. I'm leaving China for two weeks, but will have 25 days before expiration so looks like a shoe in much to my relief.

I was not aware though that (since last September) they're requiring that applications for renewals be made a month before RP expiration and that most people are now saying that their passports are being held for about three weeks. There is also a new A4 sized voucher certificate being issued that you can travel on, etc., during that time. Some even say they went out of country with it.

Well, Star Trek fans like me wouldn't know that one. Just slip streams and wormholes. Oh, and the good ol' time continuum.
