I just learned from one of my local students that, in the Ming Dynasty, there was an 'local emperor', or should we say, ruler of a region, whose family name was 'Jia' (嘉). He set up 3 regions to rule, all quite close to each other. They are:
- Jiaxing 嘉兴 (prosperity)
- Jiashan 嘉善 (not sure of this one)
- Jiading 嘉定 (stability)
The first two are cities near Shanghai in Zhejiang. Interestingly enough, that last 'Jia' is now a suburb of Shanghai where I did some time last year.
As for Jiaxing, it's about 1-2 hours from Shanghai on the train, but far enough away that commuting is not really an option. I only passed through it once on a bike trip, but the streets were very wide, the nightlife was good, and it had a very orderly feel. Another poster some time back mentioned that jobs pay around 5000-6000RMB a month.

I visited Jiaxing with the family of one of my students in Spring 2004.
The city has a nice lake area which is being fast-tracked as a Chinese local tourist destination. The lake has some historical connections to an early secret meeting of the CPC when its young leaders were under constant threat of arrest from Chiang Kai-shek. There is also a Party Museum there too.
The city is typical of many medium-sized cities in China. It is like "a work in progress" - construction is going on everywhere. So, it can be dusty and noisy and a little chaotic.
The city is famous among Chinese for its "delicious zhongzi" - triangles of pork-filled glutinous rice wrapped in a leaf.
There are not a lot of foreigners in the city. The Jiaxing locals were friendly and obliging. The "Hello!" factor was not too noticeable there - maybe that was because I was in the company of a Chinese family when I visited the city. |
