And if that doesn't work out, you could always take up on-line poker.

Any teacher who wants to earn more can easily pull in more than 3.5 million. I just checked and, since 2008, I've made more (or the same as) the average salary in Japan. I think I've done pretty well then....

I did the same. Left eikaiwa for ALT work. Took a slight paycut but gained a huge amount of time. 2-3 hours a day of sitting in the teachers' room (got straight As in grad school and worked on my Ebay business) and long holidays.

Most schools make me stay until 4:30, though. 2? Lucky man!

Haha me too. Had to do my time at the school. Knew some who rolled out around 1 or so. Would have loved that.

Eikaiwa, just isn't worth it. A lot more work, and time for not much more. I did my stint, and never again.

I saw some variation between ALT companies and BOEs. My second company and BOE had us get a hanko before leaving and so the VP was typically pretty strict about the time. I could leave around 4:15 generally.

My first company/school had no such system and so I often left around 3-3:30. No one said a word to me about it for two years.

the hanko work-around. one school I dont even go to the vp or principal. i have the teachers do it. all at once, not every day. the other school, I actually just go straight to the vp and say, laters!! he stamps it, but he is cool.. haven't had a crap school yet but they are out there.

ALT can be really sweet, especially if you have money and A LIFE... "online poker" is for losers like pitarou, who are defined solely by time spent eslcafe (ouch!). don't hate the player.... educate yourself about investing, live the dream, and stop complaining! I did and my life is great! note: not possible if you live on eslcafe...

Less of that, please.

It's true that ESL cafe is my procrastination activity of choice, but "defined solely by" is going way too far.

stumpytown,

Why can't you quote properly?

Are you just that daft that you can't quote properly?

This is a thoughtful article I found in the Japan Times online with I think pretty accurate insights into the state of the Eikaiwa (language school) industry in Japan. It is a little cynical, but has a very good follow-up discussion of experienced teachers in Japan both in and outside of language school work.

Here's the link: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2014/01/22/general/teachers-tread-water-in-eikaiwa-limbo/#.UvLIgH_4Ju4

The eikaiwa business in Japan is such a greasy, vile business.

I would never recommend anyone getting involved with it.
