Hello folks. My wife and I have both been offered positions in both Shanghai and Chengdu. The contact hours for both are 20. The Shanghai position pays 12,000 RMB and the Chengdu position pays 9000 RMB. Neither include accommodation and the rest of the details are pretty even. On the surface, Chengdu seems like it would be a better place to live (climate, cost, etc.) Based on this, which sounds better to you? |

You'll likely find many here who would recommend Chengdu over Shanghai. |

Shanghai offers more in terms of lifestyle options and general urban infrastructure - Chengdu is certainly dynamic but shanghai is a true world class city.
Obvious which I'd plump for..
Chengdu is unfortunately far more polluted than it used to be, probably not any better than SH these days from an 'on the ground' POV. The only advantage I see is the warmer winter. |

I lived in Chengdu for two years and live in Shanghai now. I miss the local community feel of Chengdu and the food is good. Shanghai doesn't really feel like I am living in China (may just be where I live). If I wanted a more authentic Chinese experience I would hands down choose Chengdu. If I wanted convenience I choose Shanghai. As far as expenses, of course it's cheaper in Chengdu (accommodation) but you can live comfortably in Shanghai (see thread in off topic...don't feel like digging it out).
