I am starting to work for "Disney English" China next Thursday.

After 23 days of training in Shanghai, Ill then head to Shenzhen (the city of my choice) for a 1 year contract.

Package: Salary 11'500 RMB +3'500 Housing allowance.

My questions are:

1. How much could I realistically save in Shenzhen with that income?

2. Has anyone worked for the 'Disney English' Shenzhen branch, and if so - what are the working conditions like?

Thanks for any info.

MG Cool

If you are at Disney English in Coastal City (area of Shenzhen), your housing stipend might cover a semi-decent 1 bedroom apartment within walking distance. You will most likely have to come out of pocket 500-800 RMB to cover bills. Shenzhen can be expensive with so many Western temptations around, but I believe one can live a comfortable life on $1000 USD (6,100 RMB) per month spending money. If very sensible you could live on less. I would anticipate the average person on your package could save 5,000 RMB per month ($800 USD).

Holiday spending not included!

Hey, Chinaroman, thanks or your tips. I have a 14-month contract, in fact. Do you reckon I could save about 7000 RMB p/m? Eating what the locals eat, while still being able to go out once a week?

This is based on my experience alone and as so others experience may differ, but salaries in SZ are usually around the Beijing and Shanghai level.

Can I have contacts of this school?
If you left them, maybe they need 1 more ESL teacher?

I know for a fact that Hampson English in Shenzhen hires non-native speakers. Pay is better than $1000 a month, but of course everything is sketchy, at best.

Thank you. I've sent my resume to them.
