I knew a couple of Slovak hit men/operatives once, and they were quite efficient, I must say. Not quite up there with umbrella-wielding Bulgarians, but no slouches either. |

Dear Sasha,
Well, I think a lot may depend on how much you love your work.
Of course, if you DO love it, it's not really work.
Regards,
John |

Much as Sasha says, I suspect what we are seeing here are the most inefficient countries, rather than the hardest working. I'd imagine that in terms of hours, the UK comes pretty low on that list, but I think it's high on the productivity league. |
Any old dig against Mexico is good, no? |
Is that a rhetorical question? I'm surprised, I thought you loved Mexico. |

Interesting article. But he isn't the only operative who used an umbrella... |

For a lot of Omanis, work seems to be a four-letter word. It's something that foreigners do for them. |

These surveys are all very well, but I'm not convinced of their accuracy. Hours spent 'at work' does not always mean 'hard at work'. Ten hours in an office in Moscow can often really just mean two hours of work, one hour plus of fag breaks, three hours of Facebook, two hours of lunch, and generally just skiving off the rest. |
Absolutely agree with this.
In Canada I worked an 8 hour day not counting lunch (30 min,) and breaks(2X 15 min.). I was expected to be working all that time. In Korea and VN they work 10 or 12 hour days but spend much of their time socializing or hanging around waiting for instructions. In VN they actually sleep and don't even bother to find a hiding place to do so.
These studies are just about manipulation and lowering wages. |

Saudis would go ballistic if they had to do two hours work.
Amazing, isn't it, that you can visit New York and not be able to smoke a fag, but a man can marry a man!
When I was in China the born-again Christians used to invite me round to dinner (their church mission sent great food from Hong Kong) and afterwards I'd amuse myself by saying "I'm just going to smoke a fag on the balcony." A woman choked on her apple pie. After a while the invitations dried up. It was after Christmas lunch when I turned up severely hungover and missed the pastor's tape recorded sermon as well as prayers. Lovely turkey though, I have to say, but it was noodles from then on. |

The headmaster at my school in Mexico (a gay American man) told me that he and a (straight) British friend of his were in a non-smoking coffee shop in Frisco when his friend blurted out "Sure would love to roll a fag!". No repercussions except deafening silence. |

Well, my dear old Nan, God rest her soul, used to burn bundles of faggots in the hearth. "Go down you to the shed, Sasha", she'd say,"and break a few faggots for the fire, 'tis cold."
Probably arrested for hate speech today, the sweet old dear. At least she rarely uttered 'niggardly'. |
