Has ZU ever been there? They hire so few and can pick and choose from those that apply to their website. I expect that UAEU and HCT are in hiring paralysis due to the Ministry's 'plan' of ending the Foundations program.

If things go as usual, there will be a panicked last minute hiring binge in September and chaos as the student numbers are there, but not enough teachers. It will just likely be worse this year...

Word is recruitment will be limited in the UAE this year. Confused

Is this 100% certain?

If so, it's quite bad news for me--and I presume many others.

Yes, it is certain. UAEU will have a booth but will not be interviewing / hiring, and I have heard that HCT and Zayed are not hiring either.

^^ I see you've skilfully covered both options with those prescient comments.

1) There won't be enough students.
2) There won't be enough teachers.

Where would we be without you.

These are not "prescient comments." They are facts very openly being discussed at the moment by Admin at these institutions.

Ignoring D.Merit's usual immaturity, on a more useful note, I wonder if it is worthwhile for people to apply through HCT's and UAEU's websites so that their CVs are on file when the inevitable crunch happens in September?

As a back-up plan if nothing better is on offer...

I'm not sure if HCT keep CVs on file or not. However, I've been applying regularly there for the last 18 months (while I scurry around getting my MA). Each time I was rejected I was given a 6 month period where I wasn't allowed to apply again. So if your qualifications are marginal then give them a shot now - you can then try again in 6 months when they are a bit more desperate. If your quals are solid then it doesn't matter if you apply now or later, but it could make sense to do it early in case they keep your application on file.

My advice is get there early on the first day . think the job fair section opens at 10 getvin there straight away and get your CV 's to the employees you are interested in. popular or sought after jobs will get lots and lots of applications. the doors close maybe 2 hrs later and then the recruiters look through the cv to decide who they will interview and about an hour later the lists go for that day and maybe the next . One year my friend was there and was first to put in her Cv for zayed and then was first on list to be interviewed ...additionally they did not accept and more cv's later as they had enough from morning and then only interviewed 30 people. all interviews were only 30 mins ...and first question was why do you want to work at ZU...

Other places like IAT and HCT interviewed about 100 over 3 days ...but IAT was also interviewing for content teachers too..

I'd be interested in learning posters' thoughts on whether or not I should put my photo on my CV for the job fair.

Also, I noticed that another poster mentioned he was going to submit cover letters with his CV. Is the common at the TESOL Arabia job fair?

So... Attaching your photo to your CV is a good idea because _______.

a) You consider yourself very good looking and hope to be judged by looks alone in order to get an interview.
b) Employers will be excited that you look like a native English speaker, which should definitely get you an interview.
c) You want to liven up the recruiters' mundane task of reviewing CVs by giving them something to rip off of your CV in order to read the thing.
d) It's very likely no one else will include theirs, so why not be different by attaching yours just for the heck of it.

Only the recruiters and the people who man the job fair desk can answer that question. But again, there is no common trend at the job fair; the employers are all independent of each other, and like the applicants, represent a very diverse pool in terms of nationality and culture. That said, do what you feel will get your CV selected (e.g., a relevant degree, solid experience, accomplishments...) and not focus on what the hundreds of other job applicants could/are possibly/might/should be doing.

Interestingly the HOD where I work has been trying desperately to stop teachers going to TESOL Arabia because he's (rightly) scared that they're (about 60% of the ex-pats) looking for jobs elsewhere.

I've been told I'm easy on the eyes. Wink
By the bitterness oozing from your post, we likely don't have that in common. Laughing

BTW, it is quite common in various parts of the world to include a photo on a CV.

If that's true, why did you respond? Are you a recruiter? Do you man the fair desk? If the answer to these questions is "No", then shouldn't you have just kept your graveling opinion to yourself?

For future reference, I'm no longer interested in your opinion on any of my posts. You come across as far too jaded and acerbic ....and I just don't have time for that. Smile

From my experience in the past, photos were required with applications in the Gulf. I would include mine. There really are no definitive answer to your questions because of the variation in the employers. Just use your best judgement... neither a photo nor a cover letter will likely "hurt" your application. If the employer(s) doesn't want either, they will just ignore them.

There was zero bitterness in my post just as there hasn't been in any of my responses to your questions on other threads within these fora. Jaded and acerbic? Not hardly. My point was that you'll find the attendees and employers at TESOL Arabia to be quite diverse; that's one of the first things you'll notice from day one. That diversity also shows in the interviews, so it's not realistic to expect everyone to have the same experience in every interviewing situation.

You very likely have the qualifications and experience (and achievements) employers are looking for, so there's no need for you to wonder about job fair trends or what other applicants might be doing. Let the instructions on the job posting guide you as to what you need to submit for the position. If a photo is requested, then provide one. If the employer expects a cover letter, then include one. Otherwise, include a photo or cover letter if you feel it will strengthen your chances of getting an interview. But also keep in mind that the recruiters will probably look at several hundred or more CVs within the first two days of the job fair, so think twice about including anything extra that might distract them or slow them down in assessing your CV. Additionally, interviewers remember those applicants who took the time to check out the university's website, which is where you'll find trends or news about the department you hope to work in.
