I'm going to be having English corners again. My new gig that hopefully starts next month is setting me up with a few a week. Ought to be a knee slapping good time.
I have adults, what I do is do four activities with the fourth being a discussion of sorts. The first three, listening, reading, and writing are to prepare them to speak. Otherwise it is 45 minutes to an hour of awkward conversation. |

no official engrish corners here.
what i had been doing is offering a voluntary 补课 (remedial engrish)
class only for my 2nd year students who need a little extra help.
that had been in addition to my already heavy workload of 12 hours.
this semester, the fao scheduled the 补课 as one of my 12 hours.
i try to keep the "class" small, 4-10 students, and mainly work on their
speaking. lots of pronunciation work. minimum grammars. i run off
several (hopefully interesting and delicious) dialogs for them to practice,
then have them make up their own.
as a group, we pick a topic for the following week. they know to look
up some useful vocabulary, and (hopefully) think about the topic and
prepare to chat about it.
if needed, we can review some of the material from their other classes
where they may be falling behind. |

Never done an English Corner in my life, never will.
Unless there are suitably aged (25+ years old) single ladies in the group (and they are in the large majority), it was in a pleasant setting with free beer/coffee/food, and I got to swop numbers with the lasses, with the intention of seeing them outside of the twattery that is called English Corner.
No time or interest or energy otherwise. |

+1 I haven't heard this phrase in a while.
I prefer the opposite: EC mandatory for students, optional for teachers.

Just picked up on your post f_c
I bought my own CD player, because the most frustrating thing is to have a lesson all worked out with an audio component and get to your top floor classroom only to find the whole audio visual desk is not operating.
I would leave the player in one of the building supervisors' offices, so I don't have to lug it from my apt each day.
Interestingly, when I left that school the FAO gave me the purchase cost of the player.
I think they were a little embarrassed at the number of classrooms that had dodgy equipment.
There were also situations where last minute classroom changes put you in a room with no a/v. |
