What are the cheapest ways to call the US and Europe? What's your favorite phone card? How about using the internet to make calls?

Thanks!

Try using voice over IP via internet. I'm pretty sure you can download different types online for free.

www.net2phone.com

...for an internet phone we have been using it since we first went to Japan in 1998. It is cheap, convenient and, if you have an ADSL connection which almost everyone in Japan does now, very very good quality.

PM me if you really want to sign up cos I can get some freebies for recommending people I think.

I don't want to deprive shmooj of his commission, but you can also use yahoo broadband. Along with the internet service, you get dirt-cheap calls to the US--something like 7 yen for three minutes. I don't know about Europe, though.

Actually, calls to the US using Yahoo BB are only 2.5 Yen a minute. That's like US$1.40 an hour! Good quality, maybe a little static every now and then, but no lag time.

Wow! Thanks, I don't know if my apt has (A)DSL or not, so yahoo BB and net2phone may not be viable options. If they're not, are there any phone cards out there that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

www.skype.com

It's by far the best and cheapest. It's free and crystal clear. Even luddites can operate it. There is also a new option where you can dial from your computer to a phone for pennies a minute.
