There is a monthly booklet....pamphlet would be more suitable.. called Qatar Happening...available in all good US styled malls out here.
Mainly made up of info on local Gas conferences and yawn....local badminton or Horse Grooming competitions...it provides a stunning insight into what is happening and hip around the glorious state of Kerrta...

Recent attempts to infiltrate this sparkling world of entertainment however have proved fruitless due to the cancellaton of various social events that may or may not have ever really existed.!

Is Qatar Happening....??
That's what I want to know....apart from the annual ATP Tennis Tournos and yearly meaningless friendly footie matches between a half interested Italian or German team and a totally hopeles Qatari team..is there really anything to do here????
I've tried the bars...shops ...museum(closed for the last 2 years for renovation)...desert trips...etc etc....and apart from eating myself into a gigantic balloon in local restuarants...can now see no real point in leaving my service apartment except to buy internet cards and copious amounts of Lilt.....

Can anyone shed light on a Happening Qatar or is it just another Mirage in a sea of emptiness????

Some years back they did a survey among diplomats of the best and worst postings in the world. The winner surprisingly was New Zealand, followed by Paris. Doha came bottom - being described as the most boring place in the world. To give you an idea how boring the diplomats considered it you need to know Riyadh came about half-way up the list.

Doha is not as boring as it appears to be.........nevertheless, one has to make an effort to find things to do here.

Doha may have been the most boring place on earth years ago but it is not anymore. I had two friends from Canada who stayed 2 weeks in Doha in February. I kept them busy every day: horse show, camel races, souq shopping, Arabic food tasting, desert safari tour, photo taking of different mosques and villas, picnic on the corniche, jewelry exhibition, visit to the museum, sheisha smoking and tea by the seaside, etc. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

Of course, they do not live here but I have been here 4 years now and I am still learning "new stuff" about the culture. Any place can be boring if you let it get to you.

Dear Doha Departed Dmb,

Sir, you are a hound and a cad!!.
If you, as you allegedly claim, had 'fun in Doha' then you should have shared it around a little!
I demand to know where this fun was..what form it took...how many people took part in it..and IS IT STILL AROUND???

Depends on what you call fun. I have been living in Qatar since 1990 and although others find it boring, I find it safe and a good place to raise a family. I can live comfortably without paying taxes out the yazoo. I hope things don't get too 'exciting' around here......

I apologize to any of you if I was one of those Landcruisers behind you doing 100Km/hr.... not with guitra however, with niqab. Laughing

Peace,
JL
