Hello everyone,
this is Al a fellow Briton and a TEFLer who hasn't ever been to KSA. I received an offer - direct hire - from a 'prestigious' - as they describe themselves- university and I am a bit hesitant as I found out that I have to submit a medical report to the Saudi embassy.
Its all ok, no AIDS/HIV or STD but the only problem is I am type 2 diabetes and I have been dealing with this for almost six years. Just to clarify I don't use any medication and I haven't used any treatment as I follow restricted diet supervised by my G.P. and the diabetes specialist nurse.
Do you think or do you know if this medical condition might prevent/ affect me from getting my employment visa ?

Dear alanportland.
Highly unlikely that condition would affect your getting a visa. Contagious diseases are the primary cause for visa denial, or if you're physically handicapped and being considered for a job that requires a certain degree of physical fitness.

I was a diabetic when I worked for Saudi Arabian Airlines from 1996 to 2002, but I did not tell them. The medical I had in London did not show that I was diabetic. Anecdotal evidence from other employees was that they would refuse to hire diabetics and terminate employees who contracted that condition. For my job at KFUPM, there was no concealment and, in fact it was the medical clinic at KFUPM that advised me to start using insulin instead of Metformin tablets.
I would say that that if you take no medication this is a non-issue, but life in KSA is a gamble ! |

Thanks John
I think I am ' reasonably' fit ( putting in mind that I am in my early 40s), actually I work as a part time workshop coordinator at a community college ( 15 hrs pw) that teaches English language to migrants and also I am volunteer in a charity which has the same service ( 10 hrs pw ), also in my condition I should be fit otherwise I have to take tablets at least to keep my sugar levels down.
cheers |

Hi Scot47
Thanks for your post.
It is unlikely that my G.P. would turn a blind eye when filling the report and lie about my condition, he/she should write the truth, and I think I would prefer that.
As for the risks of living in Saudi I am only two thirds of becoming a hermit here in UK ( no alcohol, boiled vegies most of the times and whole meal- grain products). Moreover, the TEFL or TESL market here in England is not that good and in general there is a ' csot of living crisis ( it is a common syndrome that comes together when the TORIES run the government)
So what you think ? is it still a gamble?
cheers mate

It may depend on which employer, but I know of teachers who have been had their offer withdrawn because of the medical report telling of their diabetes.

That is what I meant about the gamble. No one can give you a straight answer until the race is run ! |

Your doctor just needs to state on the medical form that your diabetes is being managed and therefore, won't interfere with your ability to do the job. Really, the Saudi government is more concerned about contagious diseases like tuberculosis and STDs. |

Hi nomad soul.
Thanks for your reply. I received a copy of the medical report by post today among other forms to be filled and taken to the embassy in London and it it says and I quote :
Quote: |
(TO BE FIT, ALL MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS MUST BE WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS. IN THE EVENT OF AN
ABNORMAL/POSITIVE RESULT, A TYPEWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED BY THE PHYSICIAN STATING THE CONDITION AND ANY TREATMENT
IMPLEMENTED. THIS LETTER SHOULD ALSO INDICATE WHETHER THIS CONDITION OR TREATMENT WILL HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE APPLICANT’S
WORK). |
So I think you are right it has to be explained by my G.P. What happens after that ? nobody could guess, I think!
I work 4 days a week here in England and I am trying to avoid all reasons that 'may' cause high sugar levels, so I think I am nearly fit !
Thanks all and I thank River Nile( we live in the same county only 14 miles separate us) who told me about this fantastic forum which definitely I will contribute to in the future ( whether this will be in KSA or anywhere else).
cheers all and have a nice weekend (ours will be in London watching the marathon and trying to catch a glimpse of the racers over the gruelling 26.2 mile course). |

A little white-out on a medical report goes a long way. |

thanks gorkomi,
Tried that but no success
It turns out that there are more problems in KSA to worry about than I thought. While I was combing through threads I was shocked.
