'teachers' is not a single category of employees, but a multitude of personnel working in a huge variety of geographical and social contexts. One could just as easily say 'teachers all over the world don't get paid holidays' (see relief teachers in London for one example of many), so I'm not really sure that there is a good argument for extrapolating this one chosen factor.
Do you think language school teachers should also get paid summer holidays? How about teachers in the corporate sector? How about vocational mentors?
I don't really see why teachers at Chinese public schools and universities should be entitled to longer holidays than everyone else - it's not like they work harder than people in other trades. If anything, they work less!
Personally I think that paid holidays will dry up, as employers gradually recognize that they can still attract and retain staff on 10 month contracts. Pity, perhaps, but it certainly appears to be a growing trend. |

Teachers are often shoved into part time positions or temp position which do not pay vacation time ...... |

I recently saw one job ad that stated neither summer or winter vacations to be paid, which is perhaps doable if the salary for the other 9 months was higher (7,000 or so), but it was one of those crap 5,000rmb starter gigs meaning you'd just average 4,000rmb a month over the space of a year, which in my opinion - unless you're willing to live like Shysty von Shystelstein - is an unlivable wage..."But local payings can have 1,500!!" STFU.
I'm of the firm belief conditions are on the decline which combined with the cost of living on the incline means most of us are starting to get doubly reamed. |

Well, I also have a strong dislike for most(almost all) of the things you cited, but it does not make me want to change nationalities. I could just as well cherry pick undesirable things associated with your nation - which I don't know and don't want to know because I don't want to get into a pointless nation-bashing contest. Just wondered why you felt the need to get in the anti-American dig on a thread(yes, I admit you started the thread) about contract benefits. |
I come from Ireland, a nation of feckless, work-shy, wife-beating drunks - When I saw us portrayed so on American TV, I laughed, oh lordy. But then, we do have a very positive sense of humor.
Oh - you just reminded me of one more for America- devoid of a sense of humor. Except for Bill Bryson, he rocks. He actually talks in his books about how humorless his countrymen are - kinda laughs at himself, thats why I like him. - oh, oh, one more - a propensity for over the top, violent, knee jerk reactions. And Invasions. Jello. McDonalds. Nascar. Everything from A to U |

Well, in my defense, it's not always easy to tell if someone is joking by the written word alone - that is why I asked you to expand on your first comment. Now you're trying to "get my goat" by doubling down, and playing the "you can't take a joke" card, which people often do when someone objects to their comments. In this case, you may be right. It actually is having an effect, because even though I am not exactly the "lampshade on the head" guy at parties, I like to think I can take a joke. And since you don't have a history a being a dick, I should have just let it go. The US of A is a big country, and it's people are often painted with too broad of a brush, which I guess I am a little too sensitive about.
BTW, I am half-Irish, and my best friend in China is an Irishman who manages an Irish pub in Ningbo - a good friend to have.
And thanks for turning me on to Bill Bryson - I had never heard of him before but he looks like he is worth a read. |

| My university: First contract 10 months. If we sign again one year. This includes 6 week winter holiday paid, and 7 weeks summer holiday paid. After half contract 7000 for airfare, and last paycheck gives us another 7000. Bonus each term 2000rmb. Teachers day bonus, and a small traveling bonus. Free housing (almost). 200rmb towards utilities. But our bills are higher in summer and winter. |

A reminder to the OP: In the U.S., teachers are not paid during the summer unless they are actually working. They can opt to have their paychecks stretched out over the summer which means less psy for the months they are working. Most teachers opt for this.
Re: Paid Holidays' Teachers are paid for all Federal and State holidays (there are exceptions, and some local holidays are probably exempt). Summerbreak in the U.S. is not a holiday. It is a period of unemployment.
I've always been paid for holidays in China and in the U.S.. I work in public colleges and universities. Summer breaks are another story. Some Chinese universities provide employment opportunities for FTs that don't leave in the summer. Some will pay for the summer even if it's not in the contract.
The disturbing trend that I've noticed in the last few employment situations is that the FAO actually sends us home for the summer. The previous employer expected everyone to check into a hotel during the summer at our own expense, even though it wasn't in the contract. This may reflect only a few situations, but it seems that the motive behind these things is the cost of utilities during the summer. |

On the OP's topic, I don't like not being paid for the full summer , but as others have said, I add up the total package , divide by the hours worked etc etc. ....The flight re-imbursement is the same (give or take) as a summer salary payment.
(on Bill Bryson, he is something of a legend in the UK, mainly coz of the rather flattering and very amusing 'Notes From a Small Island'. Sadly this book is way out-of-date now, but his book on Australia is a hoot , IMO). |

| But, as far as I understand, actual school teachers get the summers off. ESL teachers don't. If you're lucky to get a gig that gives paid time off, enjoy it. It may not last forever. It sure didn't in SK. Unis use to be the cat's meow over there; less so now. |
