From what I have read maintaining disicipline and order in Turkish classrooms seems to be a major problem. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Apart from yelling, shouting or really negative interventions. Thanks gadfly

Why Don't you create more unconventional and interesting material, related to the plan ? that's what I did.
At some point there was no control, so I used it to have them learning in other interesting ways.
Topics that are related to them
Games with prizes,
Movies (not the movies school's offering, those are old disney movies, I mean, new and interesting movies, (I can give examples if you want)
Topics of the day (internet, politics)

Starting from day one the kids will know what kind of disciplinarian you are. It's true about not being too friendly the first day. Be firm while being nice is the best. Don't let anyone get away with anything starting from the first day or you'll lose your control. Yelling doesn't work.

Hi

As gelin has already suggested the first impression that you make is the most important one .
Once the kids know that you are human after all then your life will not be worth living ,don't give them an inch or even a millimetre .
Get to know their names pdq and never ever let them call you by their first name . Smiling is not an option .
If a student does not conform to your unrealistic goals ,then stop the class and generally give he/she a verbal dressing down ,write down their name in a black or red notebook, they will grow to fear that little book ,stay calm ,talk in a low voice and after class is finished spent time with the student alone asking them to explain or justify their behaviour .
The vast majority are attention seekers ,reinforce and encourage positive behaviour from the better class members ,allocate time to encourage a pma from all of them . If this fails try a language school .
