at a university you would be getting about 4 months holiday, if you want to travel each holiday it would cost about 1 million in total

Like I said before, if you really try to spend it all, I'm sure you could. I don't see any reason you would need to spend around US$50,000 on a car. There's no reason you need to go traveling on lengthy international trips on every holiday. Apartments, sure, you get what you pay for. But that doesn't mean that it's necessary to pay 150000 yen/mo on rent.

I think rather than saying that one can't live a "normal" life on 5 million yen/year, I think it would be better to say that you can't live the life you would like to live on that amount. I think the vast majority of people would consider that lifestyle extravagant (trust me, because I make more than that and I still consider what you described extravagant).

income tax is 8% on 500000 per month it would be about 30.000
a new car costs about 5 million and keeping it over 5-6 years including depreciation, shaken and insurance plus maintenance costs 50.000 per month

With apartments in Japan they probably wouldn't be, but if you want to refine the search how about these, all 20 minutes away or less from Beppu station and less than 20 years old,

http://suumo.jp/jj/chintai/ichiran/FR301FC001/?ar=090&bs=040&pc=30&smk=&po1=00&po2=99&shkr1=03&shkr2=03&shkr3=03&shkr4=03&ra=044&rn=7050&ek=705079935&cb=0.0&ct=9999999&md=03&md=04&md=05&md=06&md=07&md=08&md=09&md=10&ts=1&et=20&mb=0&mt=9999999&cn=20&fw2=

What would be wrong with them?

Income tax isn't levied on your total salary, it's levied after deductions for the basic tax deduction, social security payments, spouses etc, have been made so you'll probably be paying more like 8% on 3 million yen or so, if that.

You don't need to buy a new car.

You don't need to go traveling every holiday.

4 million and you can have a BMW.
You do not need that. You can buy a used car for much less.
