Anybody live in Merida?
I am thinking of going on a very extended vacation to Mexico, maybe do a little teaching on the side. I have read that Merida is beautiful and awesome. I am also interested in Oaxaca and am open to other suggestions.
Also, what is rent like in a relatively large city (NOT Mexico City)?
Would love to hear from you.
Cheers,

There are two of us from Merida who frequent this forum: saraswati and me. However, saraswati has been a bit under the weather lately, so she hasn't been posting much recently. If there's anything I can help you with, feel free to email me. |

Thanks for your positive thoughts!! Am on the road to recovery and happy to be gazing at something other than my bedroom ceiling.
Both Merida and Oaxaca are wonderful places to live and work. Good choices, Lena! MELEE and Lozwich are from Oaxaca and can give you a much more recent perspective. As for Merida, feel free to contact me too, if you like. |

Thanks for the replies. I am still trying to figure out where exactly I'm going to go. I've been to Mexico a few times and am completely enamored with the country. I think I would enjoy living there, and I already speak some spanish, so that's a bonus. My only question is, can I get paid enough to live on? What kind of salary is the going rate for ESL teachers right now?
Cheers,
Elena |

Not in Merida, at least not if you want to have an extended vacation and get paid enough to live on at the same time.
Pay for teaching EFL in this city can range anywhere between 25 and 80 pesos per hour. If you found a job that paid at least 50-60 pesos per hour and you taught 25-30 hours per week, you could probably get by on that. However, you wouldn't be living like you were on vacation . . . unless, of course, you consider teaching, traveling to/from school, preparing lessons, and spending $ very conservatively as being on vacation. |

I agree with "Ben". You should decide whether you want to be on vacation or want to be working. I did not have to work the first year I was in Mexico--I had saved money in order to be able to do research for 2 books I was writing--but the second year I worked part time, which did not bring in enough money to do any real "vacationing". If you are working for an hourly rate, you will work hard--in most cases--and if you are on a full-time salary basis, you won't work as hard, but you will be required to be at the school for around 40 hours a week--which doesn't leave a lot of time for "vacationing" either. |
