Get real people!
The holidays are organised to suit the STUDENTS - remember them?
They are not organised to suit FTs.
Many students live a long way from school and travel alone can take a day or more each way.
Opening up a block of time enables them to go home.
If students game the system so what?
As in the West school are required to be 'open for instruction' for x many half days per year.
There's a trade off in getting that open for instruction requirement sorted and giving students home time.
If that gives FT the odd 7-day working week - so what? We've had the holiday. |

I agree with revilo:
"Its soooooo much easier to get Fri. Sat. and Sun. off and start work on Mon."
This would constitute the block of time. |

Private school here (why is this only aimed at public??)- yes, I am working tomorrow after a 3 day holiday. Good news is we already got a 4 day holiday LAST weekend (only 'cause school facilities were being used by the district!) and we have another 4 day holiday in early June (Children's day/ Dragon Boat combined)!
Good times! |

I was surprised this thread didn't surface until yesterday. I *almost* thought we'd get through one weekend make-up day without a thread grumbling about it, lol. I call dibs on starting the June holiday thread!
This one doesn't bother me too much...the next one for me sucks ass in a big way (same as the Jan 1, 2, 3 one they tend to do) as it comes in right around the time I'm trying to prepare / review my students for their final tests in Week 18 or so. Upsets the process.
Easy to say "Just do the work you would have done on the Friday with the Saturday class", but attendance is generally so low (in my experience) that doing their usual crap ends up a waste of time. |

| 5 days off here, start back on Monday. Contract says M-F is fair game, but not the Sabbaths. |

So dumb the way it is.
Get an extra day this week and get punished the next.
That's a relaxing thought to have during your time off.
Last year was great. Another teacher and I always blew off the make up days. Boss never said anything and we were never docked pay or reprimanded for it. |
you work at a college don't you? What's wrong, the other 120 days annual vacation not enough for you? |

A day off is a day off. Few people even care what day it is as long as it means no work. |

The thrust of this thread (and countless others over my 10 years of lurking here) is how inconsiderate of the Chinese to turn a 2-day holiday into a week's break, because it means FTs working an extended week earlier or later to compensate.
The degree of self-absorption is staggering and I try not to vent when I see it. |

I see what you mean Non~, but the idea I struggle with is questioning if it is a 'holiday' as you've still done the same amount of work. Just on different days. Having consecutive days off wasn't a benefit for me, everyone else in the country is off so travel was a nightmare. The sooner this country has staggered holidays or something the better. |

People aren't doing the same work though. For this holiday anyway it's Thurs and Fri off, work Sun in lieu of Fri. You still come out ahead, more-so if you don't have Friday classes then it's four days off. Even if it is the same amount of work would you rather 3-4 consecutive days or a holiday mid-week so nobody can go anywhere? The government knows the holidays are a disaster for travel which is one of the reasons they got rid of the Labor Day "Golden Week" a few years back and added some long weekends at other times. Not many options in a country this size. Like NS pointed out, the holiday scheme isn't set up to please FTs, but those (students, workers) who don't see their family often. FTs who work in colleges have plenty of other time to travel in summer and winter. The complaints from people who aren't happy working Sunday are trivial IMO. |

Simple solution: Put the day off on a Monday or a Friday.
It's ridiculous to take it extra easy one week and then get swamped the next. |

You still don't get it.
Would you be cool with a scheme in your own country that suggests that it would be better if Christmas Day was 'Monday-ised' ie it's a bind always having it on December 25th.
Holidays like Tomb Sweeping Day, National Day and the Chinese New Year have huge cultural significance and going home is a big part of their observance. |
