y'know, this just goes to show how good we all have it here in our china.

not only are we overpaid, held in awe, and 'work' ridiculously light
schedules, but our chinese overlords are considerate enough to give
us filthy capitalists a day off to celebrate international communist day!

May Day has its origins in the good ole US or A and is as "American" as baseball and apple pie. The American Federation of Labor proclamation "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after May 1, 1886."

International Women's Day also has its origins in that commie hotbed known as the United Socialist States of America.

Would you be cool with a scheme in your own country that suggests that it would be better if Christmas Day was 'Monday-ised' ie it's a bind always having it on December 25th.

Not a problem because I would get that one individual day off. Plus the fact it accompanies New Year's Day which would be more than a week off anyway. I would think it is absurd if I had to "make up" for a certain day at a different week.

Think of it as a debt or a loan, I would glad work and extra day next week if I could have an off day today...this is called the Wimpy Switcheroo....

It makes sense to me that single day public holidays should be tacked on to a weekend so working people have a chance to rest and recover. But Xmas and New Years (at least in NZ) are 2 day holidays during the time when a lot of people are also taking annual 4 weeks holidays as well. I know this situation is not universal but to some extent the core idea could be applied elsewhere.
In China the travel rush is a big problem so staggered holidays might be more useful.

I noticed one poster here mentioned they worked Thursday, Friday and today. By law in China if you work on a stat holiday then you are to be paid 3X your salary for those days.

The travel 'rush' is a cultural phenomenon - not an inability to plan holidays.
I've known students who spend more that 48 hours on trains just to get 2 days at home on Qing Ming, or other significant observance.
